I knew I could count on you, Tex.

Hang on, Stu. It could be worse. You could be in the Sentara system.

Second time I’ve gone to that lab ‘n no action. No orders from the doc this time ‘n he ain’t gonna be in today. They say call the office tomorrow.

Went in without it last time 'n the doc says ‘no problem go do it now.’ No fast – said it didn’t matter. Mattered to me ‘cuz the late sleepers were in by then ‘n it took o’er an hour.

Think I’ll call ‘n when I hear he’s ordered the lab I’ll reschedule the appointment. Ain’t spendin’ all mornin’ next Wednesday in that place.

Hang in there Stu.

Well things are worse this time, The Library of Congress hosting site American Memory is down due to the snot nosed brats we are stupid enough to elect.

Got these sucked off just before the site went off the air.  Seems Libby's don't make the good stuff any more. ;)

Well, BOOOO-OOOO-BOOOO!   Come the end of the month, anyhow.  In my family Halloween started early 'cause my Dad's birthday was the thity first and he liked to whoop it up; jokes and pranks all month long.

Howdy, folks, glad to see all are still percolating.  Speaking of percolating, thanks for the cawfee, e'en though it was not offered, only beer; maybe later for the beer.

Been keeping the good thoughts running for those who need them.  Sorry about your Dad's difficulties Slim, I hope they settle down and he can live the rest of his life in relative peace and comfort; I will keep your family in my thoughts.  Stu, I was hoping you would not have the ill effects of that chemo, even though I know most folks do.  Mrs Hairyman was very fortunate in her dance with it, the only thing she suffered was the loss of her hair, her crown you might say, and not being able to gain any weight, although that was not much of a thing for her since by the time she go out of the hospital after her near miss, she had attained her pre-marrying weight of 98 pounds; she was almost happy about that.  Hope your schnoz is getting all healed up, Arcey, and the vampire saga gets sorted out.  I went to the suckers last week, and they took nine of those big tubes out of me; then I went to get my "MAN" shot, and before they shot me, they stuck me and took five of the tubes worth out of my arm, same one the other vampire had used.  Got the results yesterday - textbook, except my A1C was up a bit.  Sigh!!

We have been slogging along, heads down, leanin' into the harness, tolerating the Docs and their pokin' and gougin'; making some headway after a fashion.  Mrs. Hairyman will be done with her radiation sessions next week, and glad of it; it is finally getting her down, although she doesn't let it show very much, she is quite uncomfortable from the burns.  My gut exams were a mixed bag; colon is fine, but stomach is a problem, seems I have a serious case of gastroparesis, along with chronic gastritis - doh!  No wonder I always feel kind of queasy.  Trying to sort it out with some liquid med that, so far, just gives me the gut rumbles, and a terrible methane emission problem.  Oh well, another day, another dollar to somebody.

I am studying for my Technicians Class Amateur Radio Operators License, used to be called Novice - Ham radio; just something to do to try to flex my brain a bit.  Been spreading our time between our granddaughter's sports; Bella is playing softball this year, and is doing quite well, seems to have a sort of natural feel for the game.  She didn't care much for the soccer she played the last two years, but Devin, on the other hand, seems to like soccer.  I just wonder if it is not because her stepmother is the coach, though; sometimes I get the feeling she would be just as happy to lay by the pool and be a glamour girl.

Reading about the ballast resistors took me back a few years, and I do think the consensus is correct; I even carried two of the things wrapped in a rag in my toolbox; I had a couple of friends who had Crashler vehicles and would always call on me when they couldn't get them to run.  Often as not the problem was that resistor.  It's funny how the different makers vehicles seemed to have peculiarities like that; with GM, it was points and condenser, until they came out with the HEI, then it was the module inside the distributor.  I never fooled around with Ferds enough to get to know them very well, but it seems their idiosyncrasies were more often fuel system related.

Well, daylight's burnin', Baby Bro and spousal unit are in town for day or two for her semiannual gambling fix, so he and I will be spending the day together.  Guess I'd better get to movin'.

Y'all take good care.

Later.

Seems like the carbed V8's when it was cold was to start pumping and then when your leg got tired turn it over while pumping.  Was that way at least with any pick-up I dealt with that didn't have a manual choke.

They had the National WW2 memorial  in New Orleans barricaded.  A group of WW2  vets wanted to visit, they crossed the barricades and were allowed to visit.  You gotta respect a group of men in their 80s and 90s for defying the NPS barricades. They have earned that right. I just wish that I could have been there and entered with them.

Makes me wonder why we employ So many "non-essentials" in the first place.  If they're not essential do we need them at all. Those WWII vets proved that the people can visit their own property without escort or supervision.

I'm feeling better - surprising how many different drugs it takes to be able to tolerate the drugs they gave me.   Gonna try to go back to school tomorrow. I think I'm essential. Anyone can sit in my chair all day, but it's hard to find someone to teach my students what I want them to learn.

Grits

Gotta do some more research on it later, but right now I'm not sure when the term ended up being used down south, all references I've found from the time period seems the Yankees called them grits, the Rebs called them hominy and the recipe assumed you knew they were ground.  Some do call them Hominy grits also, interesting bit that needs a bit more research, don't know if I can come up with the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but I may have a good theory.

Got a kid at work the other day, said there was no way he'd eat grits or hominy, t'was eatin' Doritos at the time too, LOL, wrecked his whole world.   ;D

Del,

Simple explanation for Hominy Grits;
Dried field corn is first soaked (perhaps with some heat) in water with a bit of wood ash (this provides a source of lye in non toxic amounts).
The lye helps softens the tough husk on the individual corn kernels allowing the meat of the kernels to expand, sloughing off husks.
The soft and expanded kernels are referred to as Hominy. After being washed and cleaned they can be eaten as is.
But, these hominy kernels may also be dried. (a modern form of these, with seasonings, maybe found today and call "Beer Nuts".)
Once the hominy is dried, it maybe coarse ground at a grist mill into Grits.
I hope this rather simple explanation offers some help.
My best,
  Blair

It offers nothing I already don't know and beyond.  That is food 101, I am beyond that and working on the PHD type thesis.

Lye aka Sodium hydroxide is not the only chemical the natives of this country use to modify the dried corn into hominy with, don't forget the slacked lime aka Calcium hydroxide that is also used to achieve the same results.  This of course converts the bound niacin to free niacin to prevent Pellagra a nutrition caused disease that is caused by the lack of niacin, a common problem in many poorer rural areas of the United States until the cause was isolated in the 1930's.

In a work of this type one needs to make sure that the terms that vary in different parts of the country and the world are explained so folks understand them and can use them when interpreting old accounts, recipes and similar type reference material in the seeking of the understanding of how the people lived in the 19th century and when wanting to duplicate the foods of the time period as accurately as possible considering the different availability and costs of certain items.

The goal is bringing it out in the spring of 2015 to insure I have put in the time needed to make it as accurate as humanly possible, this will be the culmination of about 20 years of dedicated research on the foods on the latter half of the 19th century in the United States and the circumstances that caused them to be what they were, such as the invention and commercial marketing of the horse drawn potatoe planter and digger that changed the potatoe from just another vegetable in the diet of Americans to the most popular one by WWI.  Plus of course other interesting facts about the food eaten in the time period that few today know.

It is not going to be another small ill researched cook book claiming to be cowboy or pioneer recipes using modern recipes and intended for the tourist trade at your local tourist trap.

Beer Nuts are peanuts. Corn Nuts are the Hominy ones.

Nope. they're parched corn, most likely made from the old Hickory King cultivator of corn that has such large kernels and is a type of flint corn, flint corn makes good parched corn.

Kids if you want to try this at home the multi-colored flint corn sold this time of years as Indian corn (Just a cultivator from the SW US) it works the best of any easily available corn.  Just a little oil is best and pretend like you are popping popcorn.  Smaller than corn nuts but pretty good fresh and hot.  Most modern dent corns do not make good parched corn.

Del,

It may not offer you personally anything that you didn't already know. You may indeed be a bit beyond Foods 101, but will the readers you hope to connect with in your book/thesis?
If not, then it might help offer an explanation to the "other" dummies in the rest of the world that don’t know the difference within this forum format?
Just a thought.

Well I made some hominy from scratch one time, a lot of work, guess I should have ground it and made grits, doubt those will cook in the microwave though.   ;D

What's curious, now to get back to real history of food in America, is that in the pre-1900 cook books a lot of them made up north have a lot of recipes using grits, and often more than using them for cereal for breakfast, seen casseroles like you'd take to the family re-union, thought it was interesting and will give it a few days of research when I get done with what I'm working on.

Oh before I go, just to play nice, any of you guys and I'll include Lettie as one of the guys,  ;) not know what hominy is and the fact you make it by using an alkaline substance to remove the hull and modify the structure of the rest of the grain?

OK, I've done my duty, back to making sinner-mon bread and my other tasks, I'm working on corn bread right now and I won't make everyone happy with it so I'll just PO everyone and explain how I make it and how easy it is to take the basic recipe and make it the way you want.  LOL, I know Tex will eat it the way I do, it ain't yankee, it ain't reb, it's Del's way.   ;D

Some of the older dent types would make good parched corn, but they have less of a dent than the modern industrial corn.  BTW a lot of the ears that show up in the Butcher photos is an old red type of dent corn I haven't seen in years, grandpa had a few ears around, I now wonder if that is what he grew before the hybrids came along?  Dang to late to ask him or dad, may have to go interview his HS friend Bob before it's too late.

BTW American Memory is off-line because of the bratty children. ::)

I've never had any mush leftover to try it with. I have made polenta, which is more like grits, just to try it fried but wasn't crazy about it.

Was meaning to ask awhile back - what do you all put on your grits in the morning?  I really prefer corn meal mush & I like it best with brown sugar.  I've tried both with cheese and/or salt & pepper, but prefer it sweet.

Not sure when canned hominy came about but it hasn't shown on any 19th Century grocery list I've seen so I am pretty sure it wasn't around then.  Before that did happen it was just dried and required long cooking.  But when canned goods cost 10 cents or more a can in the day of dollar a day wages, food was canned to preserve it, not to make it easy like a lot of things today.

I'm headed to bed, the pot is on, the fire banked, someone save the wood ashes, I think Blair wants to show us how to make lye from them and then make some hominy, just curious where he's going to get the corn and what type he's going to use, I don't want none of that double hybrid stuff for industrial use or animal feed, I want some real eating corn for humans.

BTW ever notice you eat hominy you don't poop it out, you eat sweet corn you do?  Might be on to something here, never know.

Oh if we don't want to make hominy we can use them wood ashes to leaven the biscuits, but I'll stick with baking soda or baking powder.

Mornin all! Coffee, tea and iced tea are ready.

In the process of running the numbers, the City has offered a retirement incentive. Trying to see if I can afford to go on December 1st, I was going to retire next December, but if I can go now it would be nice.

Stu, my answer to your, "what do you all put on your grits in the morning?"

Butter, salt & pepper mostly, sometime I crumble bacon in ...  or if I have red eye gravy I'll do that.
Some times mixed with the yoke of the sunny side up egg.

Hominy on the other hand, was never in the morning as I recall, it was Mid day or Supper side dish , also with butter, salt & pepper...

Corn meal was for making Corn Bread (Baked in a cast Iron Skillet) served in wedge with butter.

The Cracker Barrel and some others have corn bread in squares and is kinda sweet , it's OK but nothing compared to Moms from the Skillet.
The wife makes Corn Bread Muffins from a mix , It too is sweet , and will do ,  :-\ just barely.

Good luck LIT..sounds like plan !

I'm kinda thinking Dec. 2014 myself....not sure it's doable, certainly no earlier for me.

Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain 70 percent." Looks like rain thru Saturday.

Then you have to ask that other question about the corn bread, white or yellow meal? ;)  Course I guess you could do blue or red also.  Fact got a research project on the red corn, on hold right now due to the shut-down, bastards got one of my research sites down, yeah like that cost much to keep the server running, probally cost more for the gate things the vets knocked down the other day.

What event are you suggesting?

Blair, I suspect what Del is referring to is maybe the same WWII vets that took down the barricades and went in the "closed" WWII memorial may do the same thing at Gettysburg.

Someone should propose a bill to suspend the congress' pay and use it to open the parks again. After all, the park people were actually DOING their job, unlike congress.....

Last movie I went to see was Hunt for Red October. Read the book. The movie folks rewrote the ending. Rest well, Clancy.

Sorry to hear of a tornado. Just went to check on Karen. NOAA’s site doesn’t half work. Makes sense right in the middle of hurricane season. Of course, we’ve been told this would be the worst season ever. That prediction was, unfortunately, predictable. Same story year after year. And, they wonder why no one pays attention.

Im a foot dragger - still using the model 4.  I looked at the 5 someone else bought on the first day & didn't like it.  My wife downloaded ios7 on her iPad, & I don't like it either, so I'm holding off till there's a reason to change.  I happen to know that not all change is progress.

Tom, I don't think that the 5c is selling because of the colors offered, I or a white one. I did not want the other colors offered. I thought that the $45. deal was cheap enough.

when come these devices , I was born under the proverbial rock....
I carried a Nextel Motorola i868 flip phone well into the so called Smart phone era, ( and that was step up for the two soup cans & string I carried before that )

I've have a Sprint HTC 4G VEO 3-D now and only after Nextel went belly-up in the Sprint buyout....(what was that 2 years ago ? )
It has so many APP's , I have no Idea how work....

Seldom use the Text , just use the camera , and phone , and on occasion get a chuckle watching a U-tube bit,
maybe catch the weather feature

heck , I remember well the time , if you needed to call and you weren't home , you hunted a phone booth a used a dime !   ::)

No kidding... I remember Gas wars and Gas @ $ 0.17 a gallon  :o

I remember S&H Green Stamps & Top Value Stamps got my first guitar with 6 1/2 books green stamps....( and the case was 2 extra books )

Burger King had Hot Dogs , Royal Castle was 5 cents a frosty mug of Birch Beer and 10 cent hamburgers.

Big news was Elvis was going into the Army, and we had not heard of the Beatles yet ! ....

Korean War was in the news .... and Viet Nam was of little interest ....

and we had a Rotary Dial phone that came in black only !  the # was FR-37173  ( FR was the exchange ( Franklin ) no area code
and for Long distance you had to dial O and "she" would connect you.

That was a nice stroll back   :)

Back in from Kansas, had a grand time at the Grand Muster. Attendance was a bit low this year, I guess everyone is just too bust working in this great "economic recovery" we're having.

Agree on the phones, Del, My phone may still be a dumb one, but it can make a phone call or text if I want, don't care to sit around the campfire checking facebook, craigslist, stock portfolios, or zapping aliens. All that stuff distracts you from watching the fire, hearing the conversation, seeing shooting stars, or other more important activities.

My cell thing don’t wanna text no more. Wife ‘n daughters don’t know how ta talk no more. Gotta clock with the date what shows. Gotta calendar. There’s an alarm with both. Works good. Don’t gotta count-down timer. No stop watch function. There's some stuff on the menu I ain't gotta clue about. But, I want more phone when I replace this’n. 'Specially the count-down thing.

The whole idea of a phone around a camp fire is counter productive to me....
I camp or do living history for the enjoyment of a simpler time, the smart phone, dumb smart ,any phone is not part of that,
It does not exist, as it would spoil the mood   :)

LOL, well I'm in deep again, got a few Civil War renactors made at me.  BS link going around cooking forums for

100 dutch oven recipes

So I look, just recipes and so I ask why anyone needs to have a "Dutch Oven Recipe" why they just don't go ahead and cook a regular recipe?

LOL, once again I'm spot on and ruffled a lot of feathers.

I better go to work and cause trouble.  A friend from the DO page posted a cheese cake recipe on his wall, some moron he has as a friend said it wasn't healthy.  I told him to make it and eat it anyway because he'll die happy, the health food nuts will die miserable because their last meal will suck.

Let it be known (I doubt anyone here is a problem) that if I post a recipe or a picture of something I cook, anyone mentioning it's un-healthy will be told where to go in no un-certain terms.

I am often asked "what kind of stuff" or "what all" can be cooked in a dutch oven - I always answer the "same kind of stuff" or "anything that can be cooked in any other kind of oven and anything that can be cooked on top of the stove."

Mornin all, coffee, tea and iced tea are ready!

Unfortunately being a computer geek got me hook into all the fancy stuff on the new phones. I would prefer a windows phone but my carrier doesn't have them. The carriers that do want $30 to $40 a month more for their service.

Del, the few people at work who do the healthy thing are always telling me how good their food is. The showed me some stuff on a web page one day that says, "tastes like real chicken, beef, bacon, etc." I told them its funny that real chicken, beef and bacon taste that way too. Looking at something that resembles Elmer's Glue is not my idea of food. I came back later and showed them a picture of a chili dog.

LIT!  Thanks for the Cawffee this morning. I went to the AT&T store yesterday and got all my data switched over to the new phone. The 4G service is faster than the 3G.  I really like this new phone, even though I don't like the colors on the 5C phones. The white one was the only color available that I was happy with. I was wanting basic black, which was not available. I did find a black case to fit it, which covers up the white color.

Thru three PCP’s, includin’ the current one, as long as I’ve been goin’ ta this practice, thirty years or so, lab work a week prior with an eight hour fast has been SOP.

Last week when I showed up, no lab order. Checked into it by e-mail ‘n was tolt, “For physicals (rather than problem oriented visits) I normally see the patient first so I order everything needed based on the findings of the physical exam.”

I know I’m old ‘n suffer short term CRS. Ain’t so old I don’t remember the regular pre-physical visits. Kinda sorta why I showed up last week.

Best I know the lab werk is part of a physical everywhere but there these days, cuz. Something’s changed with the place. I got six months to try to find another practice.

Anyway………………..

Still cool, breezy ‘n rainy. Nice ‘n gloomy. West Point snuffed their OFSDAR party. Was goin’ Glockin’ but think I’ll stay outta downtown. The place floods with the tide in wind ‘n rain like this. Folks can’t half drive when it’s sunny ‘n dry.

I'm a bigger bully no, some person/bot posted a dozen links to recipes, no comment on if they were god or not and then liked all them.  Him and them is gone, go pin yer dang recipes on Pinterest, were about disccussing and learning

BTW Recently what few recipes I've looked at that people post on places like FB are even do able.  One lady posted one on a Lincoln forum, "spossed to be the recipe for the schools sinner-mon rolls from when we were kids.  (Wern't baad)  Was a basic sinner-mon roll recipe but they didn't say to scald the milk.  Asked the lady how they turned out since the yeast wouldn't work with out scalding the milk.  Admited she didn't cook much, (already knew that) and hadn't tried them.

As dumb as loading data from a non-reloader.

Lady at work the other day showed me a brownie recipe that would have made chock-o-late soup, they didn't put the flour in it, typo I guess.

Gonna have another cup and shower and see if I can go to work and not bite anyone.  LOL

Whudda freakin’ mess….

Leaves from two blocks both ways done plugged up the drains. Rain come down hard ‘n heavy ‘nuff to form Lake McGregor, flooded curb ta curb. Trash day. Black ones been dumped ‘n they’re floatin’ down the road.

Recycle bins still full. Managed ta get mine ‘fore it tipped o’er. Bob weren’t so lucky ‘n he’s out doin’ sumthin’. Stuff spillin’ out ‘n floatin’ down the road with the black cans. Couldn’t get to it. Got his black one ‘n drug it ta higher ground.

Rain slacked up. The lake starts ta drain good. Put my plastic jacket on. Crocs, no socks. Grabbed my pincher/picker/upper thing ‘n went after the recycle can. Knew ‘bout the time I started he’d pull up – didn’t. Rain starts again but I stayed at it got most of it. Jeans soaked. Feet soaked. Redskins work gloves (look like Wide Receiver gloves) soaked.

Shoulda gone Glockin’.

Happy Friday y'all,

Thanks for the cawfee 'Roo.

Tolt my carpool gal last nite I'm quittin' riding shotgun with her after she left her car window down in the parkin' lot. My purse was on the floor board with my keys & wallet. Payday was last nite too.....

Call me a "nervous Nelly" but I didn't find out all was OK, for 2 1/2 hrs. later after all kinds of bad scenarios play thru your head.

Guess I'll be drivin' the Jeep more often. Asked for a ride home from a couple from WY thinkin' they were camped out here in town (Reno). Turned out they were camped out in Amazon's area & commute is 40 mi. Felt like a heel for askin' but I was away from that "dingbat" driver leastways.....

I've always left the keys in my pick-up until. I bought this new Dodge & it locked me out first trip away from home.

Usually lived in low crime areas & didn't worry to much about it until someone stole My old Chevy. Didn't report it stolen until I'd checked with everyone I could think of who might have borrowed it.  Got it back later the same night - sheriff found it abandoned on the highway. Said there didn't seem to be any damage, was just out of gas. I told him it hasn't been gone long enough to burn that much gas.  Turns out the idiot kid that stole it was too stupid to figure out how to switch tanks, then he parked the one he stole to haul all of the stuff he had stolen from a liquor store in the next town in the same spot he found mine. Then he left footprints in the dirt road from there to his front door  ::)

A few years back , my wife had her Honda broken into, smashed the passenger side window... BTW this was in while she was attending a party in upscale gated community.

She had though it safe, to leave her purse in passenger foot well  ???

The Purp, got her  wallet , with CC's , SS# , ID with home address & Check book ... the Credit card was hit for $13 in Gas
I assume as a test, then $56 at another gas station, before we stopped the card.

What was STUPID was he wrote a one of her Checks  :o for his RENT ! ...BUSTED !

The deputy who caught the aforementioned idiot couldn't control his laughter while telling the story of following the footprints up to the door, knocked on the door & said idiot opened it to reveal a pick-up load of liquer & ciggarettes piled in the living room floor.  Idiot was on parol from his first time in the pen, hadn't been out three weeks.  Don't know how many different times he been sent back since.

Got on here to tell you all (especially Del) about he new dish we had for supper & go sidetracked by the idiot thief story.

One of the ladies the Wife works with at the middle school knew i was having chemo today & that the Wife was going to sit with me so she sent home a "runza cassarole" for our supper. I'd never heard of such a thing. Now that I've tried it, my opinion is: if you don't have the time or the wherewithal to make runzas, then make something else ::). Still appreciate the gesture, & it wasn't horrible, but didn't remind me much of a runza. On the other hand, not sure how much I'd enjoy even a good runza today. One the side effects ya know - food tastes like crap.

Here ya go Stu, found it, lady is a liar, ain't no meat eater ever thought this was a meat loaf:

I "discovered" this dish, Special K Cottage Cheese Loaf, at least 20 years ago when I started going to church. It was served at a lot of the potlucks after church and at people's houses after church [when they invited us home with them, way back in the day!]. I asked for the recipe and I have been making it ever since. I even fixed Special K Cottage Cheese Loaf as part of the meal for my wedding reception. Some of the non-vegetarians [meat eaters] thought it was a meat dish but it is completely meatless.
I have seen recipes for this dish online and in a lot of different cookbooks and it seems to go by a lot of different names with some variation in the ingredients though this seems to be the basic ingredients listed here. Through the many years that I've been making Special K Cottage Cheese Loaf, I have modified it many times so here it is, this is the recipe that I use when I make this for myself and my family.

Special K Cottage Cheese Loaf

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Butter or Margarine [1 stick]
1 Onion [diced, can use more or less depending on taste]
2 Tablespoons of a Vegetarian Stock like McKay's Seasoning/Broth or Worthington Brand [this can be to your taste, add a little more or less if you wish]
4 Beaten Eggs
1 large size container of Cottage Cheese
5 - 6 Cups of Special K Cereal - [I have heard that some people use Corn Flakes but I've never been brave enough to try it!]
3/4 Cup Walnuts [I put mine in a bag and hit them with either a can or a wooden rolling pin until they are very small pieces, almost fine ground]

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 F
Spray large baking pan with non-stick spray
Get a large mixing bowl and melt the butter or margarine in it [microwave]
Add the remaining ingredients EXCEPT NOT the Special K cereal, Mix Well
Add the Special K cereal, mix well
Put in your greased baking pan
Cover with foil and bake on the top rack for 45 minutes
Remove foil, turn off the heat to oven and let sit in the oven for at least 20 to 30 minutes.

Leftovers freeze well and can be reheated in the microwave.

I serve Special K Cottage Cheese Loaf with a green salad and garlic bread.

Every time a vegetarian "it tastes just like meat"  they should be tied to the bumper of my pick-up and drug, and since the only bumper is on the front,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Never figured out why someone would be a vegetarian and then spend all there time trying to make something taste like meat, just eat the meat dummy or eat the veggies.  "Here try this, it's beef, but tastes like Brussels Sproats" said no one ever.

My best at on year pendin’ escape, cusp. It’s wonderful.

Ever’ body’s done gone off money spendin’. Kind of quiet. Rain still hangin’ ‘round.

If one’s dead set against eatin’ meat, as God intended, why does one even bother ta mention some party-food type concoction mimics the taste?  Why would one want it to taste like something it isn’t? Is the author ashamed it doesn't have meat in it? Does it taste like chicken? Hell, ever'thing tastes like chicken...............................

I'm guessing that is two no votes for a dish at next years muster.  LOL

Remember fish and chicken ain't really meat cause veggies sometime say, "I'm a veggie but sometimes I eat fish and chicken."  Looks like non-meat for me tonight, got some thawed that needs used, at least she ain't gonna be there so I'm makin' hot teats boneless breast, never understood the wings thing, like tryin' to eat sunflower seats, make it out of real pieces.  Saw that one time on TV, cookes on a nuke sub was makin' hot teats boneless breast and said the guys didn't have time to waste eatin' wings.   ;)

Finally got over the lost appetite & had bowl of cornmeal mush with butter & brown sugar.

Never been a big fan of chicken - prefer beef or any red meat. Always annoyed me when someone said "try it - it tastes like chicken" - it never does. Frog legs come the closest - kind of a fishy chicken. Prefer em to chicken.

Another side effect of my chemo - red meat tastes like chicken ::)  Only it tastes like too dry chicken breast that's been dredged in dirt  :P

Guess I'll be a vegetarian for a while - my favorite meal this week is canned chicken noodle soup.

I wouldn't give up on that dish altogether, Del, maybe you could just "tweak" it a little bit. Maybe substitute some ground beef for the cottage cheese, walnuts, and fake beef broth, and some bread crumbs for the special K. Add some gravy or tomato sauce over the top and it might be ok!

Will just keep making the meatloaf the way I do, it seems to go over well, wish I had a picture of Jerry mess kit when he went back for more, lol, a meat can full of meatloaf.

Telling the story just can't do it justice. When I saw how much meatloaf he was able to pile on that mess tin, I thought there's no way he can eat that much, especially in this heat, & after how hard he worked this morning in the heat - that huge pike of hot meat will never go down. Then he went back for more :o. What really amazed me, when we got back from town, he ate a Popsicle I brought back & went back to work.

We swapped a gelding and a mare for a gelding this morning. My uncle brought my grand father's trotter, Ryan, and took the gelding and mare to a trainer in Thorp to get in shape to sell to the Amish or Mennonites. Ryan is a very gentle horse that should be better for the kids than the other two were. We still have the Tennessee Walker mare, who is now the boss of the ranch.

Time fer popcorn and Batman on ME-TV. More to follow with pictures.

Got home, looked in the ice box, looked at the chicken and got a whole new idea, doin' a spearmint that may be pretty good, as kinda cleanin' up ome odds and ends in there, will report later on the success or lack of it. :o

Chicken noodle soup again. Not sick of it yet, know what it'll taste like.

Let us know how that spearmint turns out - my temporary vegetarianism may require me to try new ways to fix chicken.

Good on ya Arcey fer takin' care the waitress & passing on valuable knowledge to the youngins.

Browned the chicken breasts in butter, added some broth stuff from a jar of chicken paste stuff, simmer a bit, added the left over sour cream, simmered a while longer, added some Parmesan cheese, simmered a while longer, baked a coupe taters, put the gravy on them, wasn't bad, some playing and tuning would make it better.

Take out pizza called the " Cowboy " from Papa Murphy's an' a Guinness was on our table with chocolate chip cookies for dessert...

Watched the NLCS games this afternoon. Pop received his Medal of Valor there at Dodgers Stadium there in '71 LAPD Academy is just down the street.....guess I'm a "lifer" Dodgers fan. One an' only time we got box seats behind home plate.

Their announcer Vin Scully is 85 yrs old, can't imagine hearin' a game not called by 'im. He has a few innings scheduled during the playoffs, he is sure beloved by us boomers on the "left coast". They have some work to do if they wanna stay in this series.
Hunted ammo for a cousin at Cabela's after the game...haha what a joke, .22 lr. snake shot & .44 mag Leverution gone like I suspected. More smaller places 'ta check. This family lives down there in the So. Cal area. Sister is goin' down next week.

Don't miss the congestion, crime or traffic. Good memories growin' up tho......

Happy Birthday to you TLD !!!!!!!! An early wish since I don't rise to early from the "hoot owl" shift

Stu,

one of my favorite "taste" memories is Lipton Chicken Noodle soup made from the dry mix packet. Can't tell you how many times, growing up, my Mom fixed that when I was feeling puny. I've eaten many a great made from scratch chicken soup, too, but for some reason Lipton has a unique flavor to my tastebuds.
Sure, likely it's nostalgia, but sometimes when nothing else sounds good I can wrestle down Lipton's.

Those popsicles were magical, don't you know!

Gotta agree with RCJ. I keep the stuff in the on site pantry for winter. Just bought some. If I have left over bird parts I’ll dice ‘em ‘n put ‘em in the soup. That ‘n a sandwich is a good, quick meal when nothin’s goin’ in the crocks.

Great for medicinal purposes too.

Day three of my poisoning treatment & nothing sounds good to eat. Managed to get to the bottom at a bowl of malto-meal, but not before it got cold. Coffee wouldn't work so I tried tea, sweetened it up & think I can can handle it now.

I am feeling better than I did at this point in the last dose - concentrating on keeping hydrated so I don't end up in the hospital instead of at school.

Make a richer broth and use a bit more spice and you don't need it, MSG is cheaper than chicken and spices.

I don't mind porridge for breakfast whether its wheat, corn or oats.  Since my main goal right now is to stay hydrated I'm sticking to soup for other meals. Chicken noodle again for lunch, but didn't want it again for supper.  Buck mentioned bean soup so I checked the pantry & found a can of bean & bacon. Went down right good & hasn't threatened a reappearance.  Unless things take a turn for the worse, I think I'll make it to school tomorrow.

Update on Ryan. He had never had anything but a harness or blanket on his back. Yesterday I put a bareback pad on him. We lead Ryan around the yard with Micah and Sackett on him - one at a time. Today, I put a saddle on him and lead him around the round pen with 5 different kids, aged 4 to 17, on him without any issues. I won't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. Got 46 rounds ah fresh ammo ‘n started plannin’ lunch. Found out the afternoon was classroom ‘n some sorta sensitivity trainin’. Got violently ill ‘n had ta miss it. Unfortunate. OK, there can be some allergy problems with it, but the risk is small if you read the fine print.

As my Dr. explained to me and with my somewhat knowledge of things, if you get sick from it with flu like symtoms and it makes you feel bad for a day or so be thankful, because if it does you would be one it hit dang hard or even killed.  Everyone that gets the shot gets a very weak mild version of it and most don't even notice, it the shot hits you that hard being weak think what the full blown one would do.  And I work with the public also.

The Doctors all told me the shot is not a live virus so it shouldn't make anyone sick.  The risk is with the nasal spray version that is a live virus & may give you the mild version of the flu.

Shouldn't but a very slight chance, most that BS dates from 30 years ago, wife used to say the same thing, she knew someone who got a flu shot back years ago and it made them sick so she didn't want it.  Yeah, she gets it now.

Kinda like that picture of the curvy road that floated up from South Dakota, the cut through the snow?  No pick-ups and they are driving on the wrong side of the road, northern Japan from 2010.

Missed that one. Did see one yesterday from South Dakota - was a muddy field with a big pit where they were dragging dead cattle to bury.  Must've been a bad storm. Ned Niederlander gave some eyewitness reports from the area over at the barracks.

Makes you wonder why if it really happened why do people need to post phony pictures of it.  ::)

TL,

I like "Sonic".
It and the food reminds me of the old "Drive Inn" daze of coursing the hang outs.
Which were also a great drive through places just to see who else were 'out and about'.
I should go there more often.
My best,

Just had my checkup, Dr thinks I'll last another year, says he'd like to trade cholesterol number with me. Didn't take the flu shot, only had one one time since I got out of the army(when I didn't have any choice). The one time was after our first daughter was born and she was to young to get one, so her mom and I got them, so we wouldn't bring it home to her. Well, they're big enough now, and flu is higher risk for kids than for me, so I'll pass. Guess if I wasn't in as good health as I am, would probably get one.

Inna moment of weakness I let ‘em talk me inta a flu shot last Wednesday. Felt like crap the whole time the kids were here. No shot last year, no flu.

Got some Remington primers when the goin’ was bad 'n any primer was hard ta come by. Broke outta box ‘n finished out the stuff I carried taday with ‘em.

First stage - BANG, BANG, pfffft, BANG, pfffffft, pffffft. Opened ‘n ejected the empty stuff to show clear ‘n there’s unburned powder in the barrel ‘n cylinder. Knockdowns were snickerin’. The pffffffts wouldn’t even take down the light stuff. Went ta the other box with unplated Winchester primed stuff; BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG! Knockdowns flattened.

Too bad most of 'em weren't Winchesters. Fourteen misses. Friends ‘n neighbors, I MIGHT get fourteen misses in ten shoots, not six stages. Three is my usual bad day 'n that's rare.

Same bullets, same powder (WST) ‘n charge loaded with the same tools. Don’t even wanna tell y’all how many them things I got left. Maybe they’ll werk in the nines with Titegroup. They sure is hell ain't goin' ta West Point next shoot in .38 Specials.

But…………………………… It was still more fun than bein’ back inna office.

OK Arcey, rub it in, I'll be out there with you soon enough.

Sleep study doc says I have to have another test with a CPAP mask. The first one was without. I guess if it improves my overall health it is a good thing. Speaking of Flu shots they offered me one today and I said okay, then they forgot to give it to me.

Well found out this week that the company I am employed with lost their contract at the site I have worked at over 6 years now. Their letter to employees basically said too bad, hope the new Contractor will pick you up. If not you will be unemployed.

 Please don't pick me up!

A few of you already know. My wife wants to move back to Montana so she can be near her ailing aging Mother. This maybe the sign it is time to go. Virginia got a whole passel of good folks. It's expensive especially in this neighborhood and they are a leaning more to the Left daily. I want to remain here at least till after the Nov elections. So I can help elect a Governor that at least stands for the sportsman. After that if I can move forward with the new company no big deal.

Anyhow I hope to shoot one more time with my pards here and maybe down the highway meet some more of you face to face. At least for a cup of coffee.

I don't do Flu Shot's don't waste asking me

I got a Flu Shot last year, and had flu like symptoms too.... I'll most likely get one , not sure whom I'll go to , My Quack where I got the one last year or maybe Walgreen's or CVS  :-\
Course I skipped a year in the past, and managed  :-\  problem is I get sinusitis. >:( anyway ....

I don't do Sonics to often, I've yet to get a Dog there that was even close to Hot
The local 7-11 has a pretty good dog, but the best is a little stand in front of my local Home Depot.....

The guy does Italian Sausage with grill onions, the smell of cooking onions is his best advertisement, it's dang tough to pass him by ...

Unfortunate music incident in the off site pantry – Holland Road - this mornin’. Their piped in noise went ta playin’ ‘our house is a very fine house’ (lower case intended). When it hit the 'two cats in the yard' thing the nausea almost reached the wretch point. Damned near a clean up call on aisle four.

Struggled ta get back ta the station wagon. Thankfully, Booker T. ‘n the MGs were cookin’ up some Green Onions. Felt better immediately.

Had my hip come part out of joint at work yesterday, my fault, did something I shouldn't.  Limped up to the work dept and got Nick to fix it.   He just finished EMT and fire training at SCC and should be able to get on in Lincoln in Feb.  An easy fix.

Then a elderly lady and her husband got stuck in the handicap elevator, got Nick and Rob, we tore the door off, but I almost fell down the stairs running for tools, the lady was having a panic attack and was on O2.

We got her out and to her car, found out she's been stuck in one when she was pregant and a lot younger and that was for a couple hours.  "I'm never getting in a elevator again" I heard her say as they were going out the door. ::)

Wife's sisters, brother & dad all showed up here to celebrate one sister's birthday - one of em brought some "Lucky Lights" as party favors. They taste the same as I remember, the package looks the same, except it doesn't say "ciggarettes" on it anywhere, & they don't have the red "lit" end.  Still kinda surprised that they are still made at all.

I know 3-4 places to get candy cigs and bubble gum seegars here.  Can get Green River, Moxie and all those old good soda pops with real sugar in them also, we don't cotton much around here to the PC crap, we done run PETA out also, last I heard they had not been active here at all for over 12 years and their leader lady went to greener pastures.

Morning y'all.
Coffee is hot.

Dad's in the hospital again. Had a high temp. Might be pneumonia. They did a cat scan and a transfusion. Should found out the results of the cat scan today.

'Tis 33 and dark. "Blustery. Mostly cloudy. Isolated flurries in the morning. Drizzle also possible in the morning. Highs in the lower 40s. West wind 15 to 25 mph."

Mornin’.

My prayers for y’all, Slim.

Pretty sure the cigar thing was at Border Station. The day the station wagon missed a turn ‘n got lost (temporally) in the low lands. I don’t go ta the place as much as I used to.

Paper’s runnin’ a six part thing on the Bounty sinkin’ a year ago. Someone I’m acquainted with scored the comment of the day.

Comment of the day

Taken Under: The wreck of the Bounty
"The piece is welcomed relief from politics and stray cats. Looking forward to the following parts as well." — More comments by R Clarence

Kinda followed that closely. Know how the story ends. Read the second part this mornin’. Interestin’. Still waitin’ on the Coast Guard’s findin’s.

Howdy y'all,

Prayers up for your dad Slim & thanks for the cawfee...

Sad news at a local middle school across town (Sparks, NV) had a shooting early this morning. 12 yr. old kid brought a firearm to school & shot 3. One was a teacher who tried to intervene & passed away as a result of his injuries, and the other 2 were fellow students whom are recovering.
Shooter is believed to have killed himself as no shots were fired from LEO's. This kid was suspected of being bullied & they story is continually being updated. Prayers up for all involved.
72 & sunny for a high in the desert with lows in the high 30's.

Off to the salt mines for me today

Hey ta yer Dad for me, Slim. Hope he’s feelin’ better.

Heard the helicopter somewhere ‘round seven er seven thirty. Figgered somethin’ got robbed. Was the news thing. A target the size of the traffic vest on that guy wouldn’t be much of a challenge with the Marlin Cowboy from my back yard if ya knock down a buildin’ ‘n cut down some trees.

Readin’ the Ford had broke down ‘n the driver ws standin’ ‘side it. School bus fullah high schoolers smacked the car ‘n run over the driver. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it. Only 27 years old.

Still had the roads shut down when I left for Sam’s.

Arcey, that is a sad one... my sis drives one of those too (short bus) route this year. She was drivin' the middle school age ones last year & they are "monsters" with a capital M !!
Had that bus pulled over to get those little brats in line before she could safely turn her eyes back on the road,( with an aide on board)....Tolt her I wouldn't last at that job...I'd drive up a mountainous road & jump out first sign of mischief...sorry LOW tolerance for bad behavior. RANT OVER....

Community here still in grievin' mode but the nation's prayers are surely welcomed Thanks ! Glad your dad is feeling better Slim, will continue the prayers for him.

Most of what gets passed off as American cheese is in fact plastic. However it is possible to find American cheese that is real cheese. I by it by he case from a wholesale outfit 'cause I can't find it in stores, & its pretty spendy, evrn in bulk, but it's real cheese so worth the effort & expense.

That stuff at Arbeys is a cheese flavored colored processed sauce.  ::) Not cheese.

If the Arby's "cheese" is anything like the "cheese sauce" used on some of the specialty sandwiches by McDonalds, it comes in a big tube like a giant caulking gun, they use the same thing for Big Mac sauce, and also tartar and mayo. (at least that's what they did 20 years ago, last time I was behind a counter there.) That stuff is not only not real cheese, but it's WAAAAYYY to salty for my taste.

Had scrambled eggs this morning with real cheese on em.

My favorite lane was open at the shop. Hung the target ‘n ran it downrange – one of the lights was burned out. Not a problem. A l’il low light trainin’ never hurts.

Took twenty five with Remington primers from the same box the fouled up things came out of. They worked. The level of Titegroup in the 9s is kinda high so the stuff covers the flash hole when the cartridge chambers. It’s kinda hit or miss with WST in the .38s. I’ll mess with ‘em again when I change loads. If that ain’t it, I got ‘nuff of ‘em left I won’t be hurtin’ for primers for 9s for the next few years.

Folks down the road are havin' a big ole addition put on their house. Stayin' away from it Them construction dudes don't care where they drop nails. Don't wanna be pluggin' tires.......................

I don't do tire plugs.  The tire shop in town will put on a real patch for $15.  I used to carry some plugs when I traipsed around the wilderness & have used one more than once to get back home.  Now that I stay closer to civilization most of the time, I'd rather have it done right.

Parent/Teacher conferences have officially started - there are three parents here already - one of might come talk to me.

Mail Carriers know all about flats. Got 50 miles of gravel road on my route, so if I don't have a nail, it'll be a rock cut. Lots of flint around here, the road graders dragging on hard pan flakes off pieces like mini arrowheads. Blazer has a slow leak on it now, maybe I'll go out and plug it.... or maybe just air it up and get it patched tomorrow. Now that I got the Blazer instead of the Taurus that burned, I can get 6 ply tires, when the ones that were on it go.

That’s the guide the pilot (lower case intended) uses, Roo. They upgraded from the AK47 issue. On page two it shows high capacity clips that hold a lot of bullets.

Brats were right nice. Better judgment had me hold onto one ‘n some of the cabbage rather'n eat it all. I'm stuffed. She don’t get in ‘fore long she’ll come home to a dark house. I’m crashin’ ‘fore long.

My schedule is three days twice a month.  I spend about four & a half hours on Friday at the horsepistol & then were a pump that gives me a slow dose till Sunday afternoon.

Yahoo screwed up my email account so I don't get my mail on the mail app on my phone anymore. Gotta see if I can figure that out.

We made calzones last night or what ever they call them.  Rita said I couldn't call them a pizza runza.  Came out good, gonna add it to the stuff we make, good one to do together.  Got here better, she only used a glass cup thing for the water and a real teaspoon for the yeast.  Her "measuring spoons" are on like a key ring, use one you wash them all.

May make a believer of her yet of the just mix it up and go method.  She was worried if we should put the sauce, meat and cheese in separate or mix them first, wondered which was the right way.  Told her we could google it but would likely be about half and half, so she mixed it. less work to fill that way. ;)

'Morning all.

I havn't been around in awhile.   1st time posting here.  been busy recovering from some stff.   Moving forward.  spent a couple of days at "Bordertown"  with my new sweetie'  (AZ state SASS near Tombstone).  It was her first look at CAS.  Not sure it made much of an impression.  CAS is not a spectator friendly sport, at least not at a big match.  the different foods ya' all are cookin' up is making me hungry.  Del, I still miss Runzas,  I will have to find a way to bring some back next time I get home to Nebraska.
I've got this elk roast in the freezer that may find it's way into the Crockpot today.  not sure what to throw in with it.  will come up with something and maybe let ya' know.  Been a long time since I have had any time to really cook an' create in the kitchen.

Del, I took all the Fat lady's chained up spoons apart.

I do that, she'll loose part of them.

Made the sinner-mon bread for food day, one of the cashiers asked if I made it, I fessed up.  She asked for the recipe, she had never seen such a tender crust.  I sent it since it's one wroted down for the book already, but told her it was just a basic bread recipe using lard and the swirl added which she knew how to do.  I bake it at about 325-350 instead of the 375-400 most recipes call for and just baste it well when done with melted real butter.  Works every  time.  She wondered why they didn't teach that in home ec and I told her they didn't want her to get better than the teacher.

Also sent her my universal "make any kind of yeast bread recipe"  I never posted it in cosie's because it is too big to post, takes I think 5 pages, but it is really the only bread recipe you will ever need.  Anyone wants it, PM me an E-Mail  the polished version will be in the book.   Still thinking spring of 2015 will be it.  Got a polish person arranged, hope to have the final draft to him by about this time next year, understands my style, just gonna dot the t's and cross the i's for me.

Do'n' a pot roast in the dutch oven today..... Browned the chuck roast and added onions while it was browning...
Had to cut around some spots on my taters then threw them in.
I use French Onion & golden Mushroom soup and about two cups of water for a quick stock, in go the carrots and it simmers for about 4 hours.
I have some minced garlic I may try ...  :-\

Went out to get some C-N soup at the store for the sick person and they were coming out, put him in back and the guy with camera and polo shirt had on gloves and had a brown paper sack, something tells me it wasn't lunch.

Cheese steaks for supper tonight with homemade potatoe bread buns, made enough extra dough to make an extra loaf, good stuff with real tater in it, not they flakey stuff out of a box or bag like all the recipes call form peeled em, boiled en and ran them through the ricer.  Regular bread recipe with about half the flour replaced with the taters.  Dough is a bit weird to work with, reminds me of well chewed bubble gum on a hot day.   I bake it at 350 to soften the crust a bit more, melted butter, before, durning and agyer baking, well worth the effort. ;)

I like the Burger King sign, makes any chance of some class go down the toilet.  Don't talk about roundy-bouts, can get you killed around here. ::)

Did find one that was fun, built it before it went anywhere, I found it by accident and played Richard Petty on a very small circle track, made about 10 laps or so in The General, had the six plies just a whinning.  Course I left real quick, kinda like Arlo and his motor-cycle, I knew it was illegal.

Back in 83, Dallas hosted a Formula One event at Fair Park, where they have the State Fair of Texas. They had a course marked off and it was still there the next week. We were over to see a show at the Music Hall. After the show was over, I noticed that the course was still open. I had a new 84 GMC pickup. I made a fewe a couple of "hot laps" on the course. I had just pulled off, when a couple of Dallas PD units rolled up.

Just could be a corner of Heaven.... not far from my shop is an Industrial row tucked away in the right corner is a Seafood distributor.

They supply several area top restaurants & ship ...but they also sell to the public ....

Fresh steamed 1.5 pound Maine Lobster $ 6.50 .... they have an area outside with tables, so you can eat there ....

Hot Crab or Lobster Bisque , Clam Chowder.... $4.00 a quart

Clams,  Oysters, steamed , fresh Catch of the day (crumb encrusted) cooked to order ( bake or fried )... sometimes trout, or haddock

OH MY  :o

I hadn't see that before. Kinda neat. I lived in that area of the state for 4 years.

'Tis 47 and foggy. Rained yesterday and overnight. "Cloudy. Showers likely in the morning...then light rain likely in the afternoon. Widespread dense fog reducing visibilities to less than 1/4 mile at times in the morning. Highs in the upper 50s. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent."

Use to be a few of them seafood (fish) camps in South Carolina. I always enjoyed eating at one.

Slim maybe the elected officials there will welcome the owners and new jobs that they will create.  Something about biting the hand that feeds you is in the back of my head.

Busy packing liquidating and getting things ready to move.

My employer was wanting to recycle me to another contract. I did some testing last week and earlier this week. I was to begin a firearms course for the new site. I decided that I would lead them on and cause an expense to give my two week notice after I started. So official on the 15th i will be un employed. So around the 1st of Dec we will head west.

Gonna miss Montana n you, Roo but I hope everything works out well for both of ya out west.

Found out the 10' X 24' barn that will be the horses temporary shelter will be delivered tomorrow. The fence guy will put up the elctrobraid fencing the week of the 11th. So by the time I retire on December 1st I'll have the horses on the property. We gave 30 day notice at the barn we board at today.

Anyone for some chow mein?   ::)  I officially got my drivers permit validated today, so I drove home from the city.  It's a good forty miles of twisty mountain road.  My nerves are shot!
