Off Topic, but the little woman is taking me to see Alan Jackson and Trace Adkins tomorrow nite.

And don't tell her but I bought her Neal Diamond tix for Christmas. (don't ask it is a looooong story) but the other nite one of them jewlery store commercials was on talking about getting Diamonds for Christmas, I turned to her and said" well, you might be gettin Diamonds for Christmas!"  I thought that was pretty funny...

now I gotta keep my trap shut til Christmas...

Curley!
How dare ya go off topic in a Tall Tales thread :o

Hope that Neil Diamond thing works out fer ya.  He's always had a way with the ladies, I hear he's one heck of a performer live.  Enjoy the Allan Jackson show, I hear he's great on stage as well.

Leo

The story behind the Diamond tickets, is that when GramaPhylls and I were just starting to date (some 21 years ago) I had already gotten Tix to seen ND. (I had promised the girl i was dating I would take her to see him. I went to a ticket agency and put a deposit on a concert that hadn't even been booked (this was a year in advance.) well, I honored my commitment to take her and of course GP was pretty jealous, but she down deep understood that I was honoring a prior commitment.) So now 22 years later I am making good on it.(But back then he was appearing at the Greek Theatre in LA (for those not familar with it the Greek is an outdoor shell in Griffith Park. ) It was where they did most of "Hot August NIte"....

So, will let ya know how ol Alan is. (I am wishin that he would bring Ol Jimmy Buffet out...but that is probably wishful thinkin)

nite to the fire

Cracklin rosie, get on board
Were gonna ride till there aint no more to go
Taking it slow
Lord, dont you know
Have made me a time with a poor mans lady

Hitchin on a twilight train
Aint nothing here that I care to take along
Maybe a song
To sing when I want
Dont need to say please to no man for a happy tune

Oh, I love my rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me, we go in style
Cracklin rose, youre a store bought woman
You make me sing like a guitar hummin
So hang on to me, girl
Our song keeps runnin on

Play it now
Play it now, my baby

Cracklin rosie, make me a smile
Girl if it lasts for an hour, thats al right
We got all night
To set the world right
Find us a dream that dont ask no questions, yeah

Oh, I love my rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me, we go in style
Cracklin rose, youre a store-bought woman
You make me sing like a guitar hummin
So hang on to me, girl

This was a favorite in my batchelor days.  Chris Issac does a good job on it too.

Melinda was mine
'Til the time
That I found her
Holding Jim
Loving Him
Then Sue came along
Loved me strong
That's what I thought
Me and Sue
But that died too

Don't know that I will
But until I can find me
The girl who'll stay
And won't play games behind me
I'll be what I am
A solitary man
Solitary man

I've had it to here
Bein' where
Love's a small word
Part-time thing
Paper ring

I know it's been done
Havin' one
Girl who'll love me
Right or wrong
Weak or strong

Don't know that I will
But until I can find me
The girl who'll stay
And won't play games behind me
I'll be what I am
A solitary man

Curley, I hope you had a good time at the Alan Jackson/Trace Atkins show.  You'll score big points with your better half with the Neil Diamond tickets.

heard a good en this morning, hadn't heard it in  a while

How old was I when I first seen old Rivers?
I can't remember when he weren't around
Well, that old fellow did a heap of work
Spent his whole life walking plowed ground.

He had a one-room shack not far from us
And well, we was about as poor as him
He had one old mule he called Midnight
And I'd trailed along after them.

He used to plow them rows straight and deep
And I'd come along near behind
A-bustin' up clods with my own bare feet
Old Rivers was a friend of mine.

That sun'd get high and that mule would work
Till old Rivers'd say, ''Whoa!''
He'd wipe his brow, lean back on the reins
And talk about a place he was gonna go.

Chorus:
He'd say, one of these days
I'm gonna climb that mountain
Walk up there amoung the clouds
Where the cotton's high
And the corn's a-growin'
And there ain't no fields to plow.

--- Instrumental ---

I got a letter today from the folks back home and
They're all fine and crops is dry
Down at the end my mama said, ''Son
You know old Rivers died.''

Just sittin' here now on this new-plowed earth
Trying to find me a little shade
With the sun beating down 'cross the field I see
That mule, old Rivers and me.

Chorus:
Now, one of these days
I'm gonna climb that mountain
Walk up there amoung the clouds
Where the cotton's high
And the corn's a-growin'
And there ain't no fields to plow.

With the sun beating down 'cross the field I see
That mule, old Rivers and me...
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

Well i used to wake the morning
before the rooster crowed
searchin for soda bottles, to get myself some dough
run em down to the corner
down to the country store
cash em in and give my money to a man named curtis lowe
old Curt was a black man
with white, curly hair
when he had a fifth of wine he did not have a care
he used to own an old dobro
used to play 'coss his knee
I'd give old curt my money and he'd play all day for me

Chorus:
Play me a song Curtis Lowe, hey Curtis Lowe
I got your drinkin money,
tune up your dobro,
people said he was useless, them people all were fools,
'cause Curtis Lowe was the finest picker to ever play the blues

He looked to be sixty, and maybe i was 10
Mama used to whoop me, but i'd go see him again
I'd clap my hands and stomp my feet just tryin to stay in time
he'd play me a song or two then take another drink a wine

Chorus

On the day old Curtis died nobody came to pray
old preacher said some words and they chunked him in the clay
well he lived a lifetime playin the black man's blues
and on the day he lost his life that's all he had to lose

Play me a song Curtis Lowe, hey Curtis Lowe
I wish that you was here so everyone would know
people said he was useless, them people all were fools
'cause Curtis Lowe was the finest picker to ever play the blues

let's add one more to the mix.  it's Trinity's favorite

[chorus]
Mama said, "Don't go near that river"
"Don't be hanging round old Catfish John"
Come the morning I'd always be there
Walking in his footsteps in the sweet Delta dawn

Take me back to another morning
To a time so long ago
When the sweet magnolia blossomed
Cotton fields were white as snow

Catfish John was a river hobo
Lived and died by the river's bend
Looking back I still remember
I was proud to be his friend

[chorus]

Born a slave in the town of Richmond
Traded for a chestnut mare
Lord, he never spoke in anger
Though his load was hard to bear

[chorus]

[chorus]
Walking in his footsteps in the sweet Delta dawn
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

"I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved."

Alan Jackson show was great. New forum here in Ontario CA. Not a bad seat in the house. At the end of the show, he did a video of all the local sites (the In and Out burger stand got a hoot.) and the Okland Raiders helmet got a boot! It was a neat touch I had never seen in a concert.... This was the last show of the tour, and he had something like 5 tractor-trailer rigs, and about 5 tour buses....they waz traveling in style.

anyways a good show. Now gotta worry the old lady don't decide to buy us Diamond tickets...

Well then we'll do another favorite a mine.

Life is so strange when its changin, yes indeed
Well Ive seen the hard times and the pressures been on me
But I keep on workin like the workin man do
And Ive got my act together, gonna walk all over you

(chorus)
Gimme back my bullets
Put em back where they belong
Aint foolin around cause I done had my fun
Aint gonna see no more damage done
Gimme back my bullets

Sweet talkin people done ran me out of town
And I drank enough whiskey to float a battleship around
But Im leavin this game one step ahead of you
And you will not hear me cry cause I do not sing the blues

(chorus)
Gimme back my bullets
Put em back where they belong
Aint foolin around cause I done had my fun
Aint gonna see no more damage done
Gimme back, gimme back my bullets
Oh, put em back... where they belong

Been up and down since I turned seventeen
Well Ive been on top, and then it seems I lost my dream
But I got it back, Im feelin better everyday
Tell all those pencil pushers, better get out of my way

(chorus)
Gimme back my bullets
Put em back where they belong
Aint foolin around, cause I done had my fun
Aint gonna see no more damage done
Gimme back, gimme back my bullets
Oh put em back where they belong
Gimme back my bullets
