Howdy.
Well I have been putting this off for a few years but this year I really want to take some Deer with a few of 45's. I am all ready to use my new chronograph to work up some loads for my 73 and my 66. I will be using smokeless . It seems that unique might be a better choice that trailboss or bullseye. What would you feel is a safe but effective velocity ? 1200 fps ?

Most states will have a minimum velocity and /or power factor that you need to meet. Contact your state fish and game dept. to ascertain what you need. wM1

I used a yellewboy carbine in 45 colt to take a nice Doe a few years back . I used Unique powder and a 250 grain bullet , shot her in the neck . She may have ran 30 yards . She was about 50 yards when I fired . One shot one kill .

Hope everyone has had a chance to shoot their rifles . Hunting season is close at hand . I plan on shooting this weekend . I like to shoot at several distances . I start at 25 then 50 then 75 and finish up with 100 yards . I hunt in the woods and usually stay at 50 yards or less . The Buck I shot last year was at 65 yards .

Got this boar running in the woods. Shot three times while he was running, all hits, he dropped on the third. Used black powder sub. Distance was about forty yards.

The weather is starting to cool down ,are you ready for hunting season ? Have you been out shooting , can you knock a flea off a dogs ear . And never touch the dog . They really appreciate that . I have my Meister bullets loaded and ready . Are you ready for Deer season .

You should really slug your bore first, to find out what you need. might save you some $$.

Then why not do it? It only takes a few minutes.
Generally though, the 429 or 430 is going to work if it's a newer gun. All newer ones I've checked are .429 bores. If it's an original or an older Uberti it definitely should be slugged.

I hesitated (procrastinated) slugging the bore of my 45-70. Wasn't quite sure what to use. Finally, I flattened a lead round ball for my 44 cap and ball (0.451" smashed to over .462") and drove it down the barrel with a wooden dowel and mallet. I wish that I would have done this when I first bought the rifle. I was getting terrible accuracy, and found out why when I slugged the barrel...I was shooting 0.02" under-bore bullets. She groups fine now that I'm using the proper sized bullet!

Got a chance to shoot the other day . I was shooting my Vintage Hunting Ammo . The 44wcf is an Excellent shooter . The 200 grain bullet traveling at 1300 fps does a great job .
