In July of 1835, General Edmund Gaines and his aid Lt. Geroge A. McCall, stopped for the night at Waterloo, Tenn. They were shown to the best room in the establishment. (Although they did not know it.) The room was 12 X 8 with two cots w/o mosquito-nets. Lt. McCall estimated the number of mosquitos to be approximately "two to very cubic inch." To alliveate the situation the Lt. offered to fire up a cigar. The General who was "decidedly averse to the use of tobacco, both phisically and morally;" said "...if you will give me a cigar, I'll try to help you." [From Letters From the Frontiers, by George Archibald McCall]
