Ok, I've got to ask:  What is a 'T-rex' match?

I've got ammo loaded for myself and Dr. Bob.

I had always thought that Bob was your friend...why would you do this to him?

I have the ammo I need for the match loaded but I might load some extra.

I to would like to know what the "T-Rex" match is ???

I even found my old buckskinning throwing knife (can't seem to find a hawk though) I guess I'll have to put a block up and try my hand at knife throwing again. ;D

Can't wait for the Nationals.... ;D ;D Just got through loading 400 rounds of 44/40, and 400 rounds of 45 Long Colt, black powder of course on my new Hornaday Lock N Load progressive press... Got the whole nine yards with it including the Hornaday Black Powder Lock N Load Powder Measure.

Beats the heck out of doing them one at a time. Took just over an hour to load 800 rounds.....And I just got the thing last wednesday....I guess you could call me a gamer!! ;D ;D Now, if Hornaday will hurry up and get my special order .44 colt shell plate to me...I'll be ultra modern and this press comes with a short stroke kit built in...faster and faster and......... Gonna have a Lyman 55 Black Powder Measure with the drop tubes for sale at the Nationals if any one is interested...don't need it any more...

For those inquiring minds that want to know what the "T-Rex" side match is:  It is a side match where those 'wimpy' loads will not cut the mustard.  Pistol and rifle. They are buffalo silhouette targets at various distances.  You have a given number of cartridges, and shoot them on the clock.  They have to fall to count.  Ringers only count in horseshoes.  :D  :P  ;D  :)  ;)

We've also got a match scheduled at Hooten called, "Split the Ball". Its where you stick a playing card in a wooden board edge wise, put two clay pigeons on each side, place the target out to about a 150 yards, shoot at the edge of the card with your period correct revolver of choice, in common use, and with a one hand hold try to break both clay pigeons with one shot.............., Blind folded..... ;) ;) We were going to use a double bitted axe in place of the card, but in this part of the country we thought it would be too easy.... and then then there's the safety issue..... ;D ;D

Actually, I have always enjoyed side matches that involved paper punching.  Being an old bullseye shooter I would like to see an aggregate say 25 yards revolver,  50 yards rifle, with a winner for each and then a combination winner.  The revolver should be 10 shots as in the tradition of pistol shooting..

Another fun pistol side match we call "The Gunfighter"  you have 5 plates and a standard 25 yard pistol target.  You start with a revolver loaded with 5 rounds in each hand.  At the beep you must knock down all the plates, alternating guns until all 5 plates are down.  You then shoot the remaining rounds at the paper target.  So if you get the 5 plates with 5 shots you can get a possible of 50 points.  The time is the tie breaker.  I have seen this match ran as a re-entry type for a dollar a round or sometimes 3 tries for $5.00.  It can be a real money maker if you have some people who like to shoot bulls eye.  You give out half the money to the first 2 places.  I have been know to spend too much money trying for that "Possible" :o.  I sure would like to see that at the Nationals. ;D

I would recommend 44's and up on the T-Rex.  Full case of BP and heavy bullet.  Or equivalent. Pistol and  Pistol caliber rifle, 56-50 Spencer included.  You are limited to number of shots with each and shoot on the clock.  Be advised, most of these targets will NOT fall to 38's or equivalent loads.
To fully appreciate it, a typical 45 Colt load would be 35 gr. FFg and a 250 gr. bullet.  Gives you the maximum satisfaction.
:D  :)

Does the timer of the T-Rex Match tell the shooter, "Get it on, bang a gong"? ;)

Question, and this may seem stupid to those that always camp at the Nationals.

Since food is provide.

Do they allow campfires at the Hooten Town in the primitive campsites?  Do you need to bring wood?

I know the rules for camping at a hotel a little better. ;D

Jerry,
Yes....I've had several people ask, and French Jack assures me that as long as the sod is put back we can have a camp fire.....gotta love the bacon and eggs on an open fire in the morning!!!  :D :D :D

Sinice you and OT are camping with me and Will, I'll bring a skillet and spit, I don't drink a lot of coffee so I don't have a coffee pot but I do have a small two quart boiler I can bring...bring your own food and eating utensils......

French Jack,

Is there firewood available at Hotten, or do we need to bring something to burn in our fire pit??  Thanks.

No need to bring firewood.  We are surrounded by the Jefferson National Forest  --- with plenty of trees.

Speaking of a surronding forest...., What is the mosquito quotient down there. Up in Michigan we are having a banner year of the little blood suckers. Our horses won't leave the barn. I may be the one who gets west nile disease while mowing the lawn. I guess I wanta know if I have to sneak a can of DEET into my period correct haversack.

Do you remember the good old day's when the DNR would hose down the campgrounds with DDT, then Rachel Carson came out with "Silent Spring" and we've been scratching at the little devil's ever since.
