I wish you could find Triple 7 for $14 a can now . The last can I priced was $24 . Better off shooting Swiss if you can get your hands on it .

Wal Mart USED to put 777 in the clearance iasle after deer season was over, kept dropping the price every week until it all sold. Kind of like a reverse auction. I got T7 as low as $12 and Pyrodex at $9-10! Apparently, sombody there got the wise idea that it will store just fine untill next deer season, so those sales are gone now! I still have 1 unopened T7 and a couple of Pyrodex RS left from that.

The weather was Excellent for January . Sunshine and 59 degree's it was great . I had ammo loaded with Triple 7. I had a box loaded with .427 and another box loaded with .429 bullets . The .429 gave the best group , imagine that . The velocities were good 1330 fps .If you can't get Black the T7 will work .

Been thinking about using T7 in the 44-40 myself. What load do you use?

I have used a starting load of 22.5 grains BY WEIGHT under a 200 grain bullet . Then I bumped it up to 24.5 grains and that gave me 1300 fps which is a pretty HOT load for the old 73 . Do not use 3f powder make sure you use 2f .

Congratulations on that nice buck. The load you are using for the 777 2fg, do you have any idea of the volumetric measure? Fill the case with minimum compression maybe? Do you think my brass frame Henry would be ok with it?

I shot some rounds yesterday that were loaded with APP. A member of our posse sold me his 44-40 revolver and threw in all the ammo he had loaded for it.

I remember him telling me they were loaded with APP and he also had it marked on the box. I can say that is the best BP substitute I have tried regarding shooting and cleanup. The rounds have a ton of smoke and the gun ran much cleaner than it would with Pyrodex and didn't get that stubborn hard gray fouling like T7. As with other subs it doesn't sound like BP but has more of a loud crack like smokeless powder. It does get a dry like black buildup similar to T7 but the APP fouling flakes and wipes right off.

The revolver cleaned up with just a couple swipes of a brush and a couple wet patches. I was impressed because I have shot T7 and Pyrodex and always hated the cleanup. Especially Pyrodex, I hate Pyrodex. On a calm day after shooting a few rounds of Pyrodex you can listen real close and hear your gun rust.

That one is 7 1/2 which is probably my favorite. 5 1/2 used to be my favorite and its almost still a toss up of which I like the best.

The APP works good for cowboy shooting . But it was slower than I wanted for a Hunting load . I was hoping you had a 4 3/4 you wanted to trade for a 1887 shotgun ????

No I don't Rowdy. My next one may be a 4 3/4 since I don't have any of them at this time.

The 4 3/4 are really great when it comes to packing . And I can't tell any difference in accuracy between it and a 5 1/2 .

Plan on coyote hunting tomorrow . I will be using my Triple 7 load . I shot a coyote in Deer season but didn't get any pictures . He was a large male , probably ate his weight in rabbits and Quail daily .

I like T7 in the smaller cases to keep the velocity up.

2 things that may be helpful -

in my experience, using an overpowder wad/card helps with accuracy, as it protects the bullets base from deformation.
&
vinegar Windex (non ammonia) can't be beat for cleaning up after BP subs.

T4t

I like the velocities that triple 7 gives , but It does lead up . I  have tried a Hornady xtp over the t7 . I had to resize them to a .427 I loaded 6 rounds and shot them over the chronie and then at a target at 50 yards and they gave a excellent group . Has anyone tried that yet ?
