Ah My Dear Mako, Sir Charles -

Appopollygollies * for any misunderstandings;  in fact I was only randomly flinging Monty quotes, such as "No, No Let me face the peril!"

and whilst the intent was not about random violence directed at anyone,  I am certain Sir Charles "has been killed by experts" and thus would have no fear of us :-)

"Have you ever killed anyone? "
"Naw, but I hurt someone's feelings  once" **

I trust that the bond of manly commaraderie is undiminished

* can anyone place this obscure movie reference?
** if you don't recognize this quote, here is another hint: "What's the color of the boathouse at at Hereford?"

Hey Noz,
I could use 3 lbs of beeswax to go with my new mother load of mutton tallow.  I'm not in a hurry because I still have some on hand.  If you'd care to sell some to your pards drop me a PM when you get some to sell.

My shipment from Dixie arrived a few minutes ago.

It isn't "white as snow" like the last time I got some from them, but it isn't yellow either.

Just a tint of not white (yellow would be as close as I could come to describing the tint), but if I asked someone what color it is, they would probably say white.

The smell is unmistakable  ;)

Pictures of the Current and old Dixie Tallow
« Reply #48 on: May 19, 2011, 05:23:44 PM »
John Boy,
I received the pictures a short time ago and I had a quick phone conversation with my daughter.  She is  actually very qualified (overqualified really) to make observations and give me a report, but this is basically what she said.
  • The color is consistent between the old tallow and the new.
  • The odor is consistent between the old tallow and the new.
  • Neither of them are white, they are an off white tending towards yellow or "off-white" as my wife reported.
  • Based on the color and consistency she would say that the source or at least the rendering process is the same for the old and the new.

She is at least as qualified as I am to make the  judgement on processing.

Here are the pictures, the old tallow is in the tub with the blue tape.  The old partial tub is at least 3 years old and possibly older. It has been stored in a controlled environment inside of a sealed plastic box along with beeswax, paraffin, lanolin, soy wax, some other lubricant ingredients I have tried and about a half tub volume of already mixed lube.

http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt358/Mako_CAS/Lube%20and%20Loading/P5190029.jpg

I'm not sure if the colors are dead on because I am just looking at the photos and don't have the tallow to compare it to.  I'll check it when I get back home.  She said she used a light I had in the shop for illumination it because the flash kept washing the colors out. I know the one she was using and since it is an incandescent bulb it may be accentuating the yellow hues.

Based on these photos and her report I would have to say it is obvious the color hasn't changed.

If memory serves, this is pretty much the color I remember.  It's also about the same color as the actual lubricant I make.

Mako,

Speaking of the odor, I am going to try something a bit different this batch.

I make Citronella lamp oil myself (about 4 bucks total a gallon) for keeping the bugs away rather than buying the way overpriced 12+ dollars a gallon stuff.  I go thru about 50 gallons of this home made stuff a year, burning it in the yard to keep the bugs away in my collection of antique kerosene lamps and road bombs.

I found a bulk source of concentrated "Citronella Java Oil", a small amount of which gets added to kerosene to make overpriced  citronella lamp oil.

I am going to try adding just a bit of it to a batch of BP lube to tone down the odor a bit and increase the odds of being able to pan lube in the kitchen instead of outside on the BBQ, usually when it is raining for some reason.

rickk,
Don't add much, see how little you can get away with.  I do my lubrication in the shop but it would be interesting to see if the odor could be attenuated.  It doesn't bother me, I have gotten comments from the two younger daughters who were shooting with me.  I am trying to convince the only one still at home to try BP instead of nitro since her sister is now away at school.  That one said real powder made her hair "smell."

Hey pards,

I have mentioned this all natural, long life, BP friendly, tallow substitute in the past.....COPHA

It's 100% fat, hydrogenated coconut oil. Also sold as Krementa(NZ), Vegetaline(France), Palmin(Germany) or coconut fat in Europe.

The recipe I use is..... 4 parts beeswax, 3 parts Copha, 1 part olive oil(more if required) plus a little Oil of Wintergreen to help homogenise(optional).

I've found it great to pan lube BigLube boolits for cartridge & C&B plus as an over-ball lube. Microwave it too to dip shotgun fibre wads. ;) Won't use anything else.

Much too fattening...

Soon to be banned by most North Eastern states for health reasons...  Bringing a doughnut to school or serving one in an eatery without the correct signage will soon be a Federal felony offense.  I can only imagine the penalty for using it in a firearm.

You won't catch me flirting with danger like that.

I'm glad to see that Dixie has lamb's tallow again.

While they were out I ordered eight pounds from these guys:

Hey Mike,
I must be blind, I can't find Mutton Tallow on the site.  I can find beef tallow and beef suet.

I think they only have it when they are butchering lambs. I got 8 pounds a couple of months ago and I told a few friends and they stocked up too. So it may be awhile until they have more.

Hi I brought up this old thread because I finally found a good source for Mutton Tallow. I was going to buy from Dixie Gun Works, but from the new reviews on there product it doesn't sound too good.....and they are selling 10/12oz. jars as 1lb.

The lady is Real nice and her procuct comes out of Australia. It is 100% pure Mutton Tallow. Company has been around since 1895 and has been in her family since the 50's.

Her price is $10/lb but it is an honost lb and I think it is cosmetic grade.
Here is contact info....(no web sight yet and that is why she was so had to find).

I get no kickbacks from this...I just wanted to share this info with you guys so now we all have a good source for our tallow.  :D

There's always the SPG Lube sold for bullet lube smokeless or blackpowder. The secrete ingredient that made the black powder cartridge world stand on end in joy,,,,because it works and is said to be the best.......is unknown to me but I read it's medicinal mineral oil. Some people swear by mineraloil for a lube ingredient. Not me though after I tried it on patches while loading muzzle loading rifle. It caked up the bore with dry hard fouling pronto.
So......maybe mineral oil isn't good but......some swear by it saying that the most refined petroleum products aren't bad for blackpowder fouling as the old tale says.....oil based products suck for blackpowder lubes.
I know that the Lee Alox bullet lube used to be good for black. Then they changed it and now it sucks. There are lots of alox's and one of them is really good for black and they are oil based I guess.
First time I invented lube pills to use on the powder in cap&baller revolvers( there were already semi-geniuses that used grease cookies  in smokeless rounds before me and too bad I didn't find it out sooner to save me the trouble of thunkin it out.)  :'(     Anywhoooo I might be the first to start putting the lube pills on the powder where they belong. No wait....I thunk E. Kieth used wool wads on the powder in his Navy Colt way before me. My claim tofame always ends in defeat. :'(
Anywhoooo....that is not related to this thread except to make someone laugh a little. The point is.....there is an alox that is super good for black powder. Really good. There also used to be Hodgdon lube called Spit Ball and a Spit Patch that was so good with the black it amazes me. First time I used a Lee Alox/Hodgdon Spit Ball mix to make lube pills for the cap&ballers revolvers I fired five or six cylinders full of balls and then removed the Colt barrel to see what the fouling looked like.
The fouling didn't look like anything because there WAS NONE! The barrel was shiny like new and unfired with very few tiny specks of fouling.
I used that combo for the cap&ball revolvers till....the Hodgdon lube was made no more and they changed the Lee Alox to a different alox that didn't work for blackpowder.
By the way.....the Hodgdon lube was petroleum based.
