I found you some on amazon.com, 2$ an once! :o  I'm down to a tube myself, don't know what I'll do when I use it up.  Of course the last time I bought any was 6 years ago.  On the other hand amazon did have beef tallow by the pound.

Ya Will, I see it in 1 ounce cans for crazy prices too.

I am waiting for an email from a rendering plant. They seemed to think maybe they would have some around the end of January.

If I get the amount I asked for, I will have lots more than I need and will post some for sale in the for sale section at a really good price. I bought quite a bit of Paraffin and Beeswax a couple years ago, so I might make up a zillion pounds of bullet lube all at once. It is way less messy to handle than plain tallow once mixed up.

I always keep the tallow in the back of the fridge, but once mixed, I pour the mixed lube into empty cat food cans and store them at room temperature with no problems (except for the already mentioned mouse issue).  The cat food cans work well. I can stick a can into the BBQ grill to melt it, soak wads in the can, and when done just turn the grill off and let is harden again. An awl makes a handy tool for dipping the wads in the molten lube.

Sounds good, you start selling mutton tallow and I'll definatly stock up on it.  I'm down to about 10 lbs. of mixed lube!  But when it's gone I don't know where I'll get more mutton tallow.

And then, there's the old Hungarian recipe for making mutton tallow (or anything else involving mutton). It begins: "First, steal a sheep."

Dixie has Mutton Tallow again.

I was talking to my wife by phone today and she told me the 6 pounds I ordered from Dixie arrived yesterday,  I had her open the box just to make sure.

I was on a different forum a couple of weeks ago and someone said Dixie had it, I always take what I read with a grain of salt, but someone who has recently been corresponding with me ordered two tubs and received it so I ordered 6.

" take this thy special tallow that with it thou mayest make gun powder lubricant and blow thy targets to tiny bits, in thy mercy.  And there was much rejoicing...And people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large ---"

Thank You Mako!

I just ordered 5# from Dixie.

My "source" did not come through for me.

They had close to 100# of it, but were afraid to sell it. We had originally been talking 50 cents a pound when I first contacted them.

They don't know how the USDA wants it sold paperwork wise. I have a USDA issued farm ID number, and thought it might help, but they just didn't know at all how the USDA wants the paper trail for the stuff handled. You would think it was morphine or something they way it is controlled now.

They told me they were talking to a Bio-Fuel place and trying to get them to buy it all, but even the Bio-Fuel place wasn't quite sure how to do it.

John Boy,
She looked and said that it isn't as white as shortening but it wasn't "yellow."  I tried to get her to go find a half full tub I have in the shop, but she said she wasn't going to look for something out there unless it was "life or death."  That's a sore spot with her, I used to call her up a lot and ask for her to go find something out there for me...

She only opened one tub up but she said it was hard, consistent in color with nothing "slimy" (her term) and looked like off white lard or shortening.  I can't remember what the Mutton Tallow used to look like,  I'll take a picture and post it when I get back if I can't get one of the kids to do it.  One of them is supposed to be back this Thursday from college, I'll see if I can get her to do it.

Mako

Paladin,

The US Department of Agriculture has come down hard on many US farms as well as a few feed suppliers for using animal byproducts as a source of animal feed. It has been proven to be linked to "Mad Cow Disease". No one wants to be caught with it in their possession, or get caught dealing in it it.

The detection of this disease in even a single cow can shut down the entire export of meat for the entire country for quite some time.  The financial impact is astronomical, so the USDA is taking this very seriously. China has been shut down several times, so it really can happen.

BP shooters in the US use so little of this stuff that it apparently just isn't worth the risk to deal in the stuff at all.

I am glad that Dixie is selling it, and I hope they have a reliable source of it. I would think that selling it in overpriced 1# containers would avoid the evil eye of the government as no one in their right mind would pay 6 bucks a pound for the stuff to feed it to cows.

On the front end of the supply chain though, where it is traded in 55 gallon drums for pennies a pound is where the scrutiny will be applied.

I think I'll just go down to my neighbourhood butcher and scrounge some fatty lamb trimmings and make some tallow at home.  Seems a lot simpler.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

Didn't you read my post?  I just got 6 tubs of it delivered from Dixie, that's what we are talking about.

I'm sorry Sir Charles, but it struck me as funny.

Right now we are trying to determine if it meets John Boy's approval for quality.  I am going to have someone take some pictures, but according to my wife it sounds like it has met the "not slimy" requirement...

Professor,
Don't take it wrong, I like Sir Charles.

It just struck me as funny because my initial proclamation on Saturday, and in bold large letters to boot, was that Dixie had tallow!!!!  I was figuratively shouting from the roof tops that Dixie had it in stock again.

I laughed because I was thinking of how many how many times have I have missed the obvious in my life.  Way too many times to even keep track.  I was just funn'n him a little.

And it is a happy time.  Rickk brought us down (not his fault) and our new pard Swampmouse made my day (he's the one who told me it was available again).  Speaking of Swampmouse, has anyone heard from him?  I think he lives North of New Orleans somewhere near the river.  I hope he's dry.

Mako;  Thanks for the "left handed compliment".  As I make my own mutton tallow, the minor details of who gets what & from where becomes less important than adding more information & ideas to the discussion.

Yeah! I miss a bit, but I don't miss the good intentions of members of this forum.

Sir Charles,
Then let me rephrase it!

I thoroughly like Sir Charles deMouton-Black...

I was actually laughing at myself, it's the kind of thing I would do.  In fact I believe the Saturday post ended up on the previous page and it would be easy to miss.

Now what else can I do to salvage my good standing with you? :)

Yesterday, on a whim I called up a buddy of mine from the county in the Midwest where I grew up. He still lives there. It was at one time THE largest sheep producing county in the USA. I thought that surely someone he & I knew or an Amishman there must render some tallow. He told me ZERO that he knew of and he knows everyone. He said all the sheep & lambs get shipped off to be butchered nowadays. I think the mutton tallow Dixie has is coming from India which is a HUGE tallow producer for soap products.
