According to the CBS website Comanche Moon will be shown on January 13th, 15th & 16th.

I wasn't really impressed with the acting. Are they trying to make this a comedy??

What gives ?

I did like the clothing , firearms and gear. but thought the actors were searching to find their characters..Guess I'm still stuck on Old Gus and Woodrow.

Yeah, but that was a Walker that young Gus was shooting  bottles  (at!).  Did anybody get a close look at that rifle hanging in the governors' office?  My TV (or my eyes) doesen't have enough resolution to make it out.  So far, the first episode seems to stick  close to the book, but it's been awhile since I read it.  The weapons and the clothing are good.  And how can you follow up on Robert Duvall as the older Gus?  None of Hollywoods current crop of actors/"stars"/jock sniffers can hold a candle to ole Bob, so we gotta take what we can get.  I found it enjoyable, and will certainly watch the rest of it.
And now, for a historical question, brought up by the previews of the rest of the movie:  When the plains Indians went on the warpath, did they put warpaint on their horses?

Both young actors are trying to 'do' Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall - it can't be easy copying those mannerisms that were so developed in the original 'Lonesome Dove'.

The asked-about rifle is a 'Colt's Revolving Rifle'.

As to the painting of war ponies - yes - and often with the same pattern they used on themselves.

EXACTLY ,, I knew they were off a bit in the characters , looking at it again today ..I can see you are right on the money .

As I said I wasn't impressed with the acting .. as for the series itself I most certainly won't wan to miss any of it . All the shows have little gems to pick up on , and I don't mean to be critical.

Just watching it and thinking about living in those times and situations is a treat.

I was pleased that they both did a good job of acting like Gus and Woodrow from the original.  My, 18 years ago...

By beef is with CBS: what's with repeating a 5 second snippet as they break to commercial and then previewing a 5 second snippet of what's gonna happen when the commercials are done?  Bet that when the credits roll, they'll go to a double picture to advertise Letterman or something and have a voice talking over the music.  Idiots treat all their programs like it's nothing but an excuse to sell something.  Not that I have an opinion or anything...  :-[

Well Having just finished the book Friday I must say that the movie's weapons are much more authentic than the book. >:(

McMurtry has Gus and Call using Winchester rifles prior to the Civil War??? ::)  He also has them reloading their revolvers with cartridges again before the Civil War.

I enjoyed the book but felt the author's normal playing fast and loose with history is annoying at best.

Ditto that.  ;)  I am watching part 2 now. So far I have enjoyed the series. The Indian raid on Austin was good.

Also, I believe Scull was singing in Gaelic & not German when hanging in the cage(?).

I thought it was German also, but now wish I could hear it again.  I might well have been Gaelic (not that I could probably tell the difference anyway)....

So far I like the script. Steve Zahn has Gus's (Duval's) mannerisms down pat. I also like that Buck Taylor made a cameo appearance in the movie (It’s Buck I am standing next to in my avatar FWIW). And Wes Studi is very convincing in his portrayal of a Comanche. He also has Huron, Pawnee, Apache and Cherokee down pat too.  ;D I'll definitely buy the DVD.

McMurtry tends to play fast and loose with history and historical characters in his novels, which is one reason I don't like his books.  I swore off him after Deadman's Walk.  I'll watch the movies but I won't read the books.
