A sheriff's office report shows lawyer Paul Bayless pulled the trigger of the .380 semiautomatic pistol, firing a round through a wall and into a computer monitor in the other room.
Kenton Treat, a volunteer with the department, handed Bayless the loaded gun a moment before at the lawyer's request.
No one was injured in the late morning shooting. The report shows Treat told Bayless the gun was loaded, but the lawyer pulled the trigger after mistaking its laser sight for a harmless toy.
Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says the incident stemmed from careless.
He says deputies had no plans to charge anyone in the shooting. Montgomery did not say why the volunteer had a loaded gun in the sheriff's office.
