New (old) scattergun This one's a darkside cannon fer shore
« on: September 09, 2006, 11:55:24 PM »
So, I wandered over to a local auction house, and lo and behold, I find an old Hammer double, all forelorn and ugly, with a formerly broken wrist that had been repaired by some horse shoe specialist.  Argh!

So, I looked this fine old English double over, and she appears in good order excepting that ugly stock fix.  Dirty, sure, a lotta crud and maybe 125 or  so years have seen her through god knows what.

Well, she ain't gonna go on no fancy sellr's page fer no $3000 (a real good specimen of this gun might, but she's a plenty good CAS gun.

30 inch tubes, who knows what choke, the rib is marked "F Williams Fine Damascus Field Gun" and it has Birmingham proof marks for BP before 1902 (or so the auctioneer says based on his proof mark book)

Looks like a fine saloon keeper's gun to me ;)

How tight does she lock up Jack?  That'd be my first concern.  Then, with original loads of BP, she may well do some great SASS duty for ya.  Fine old guns deserve to get some use.  Sure, some are wall hangers only for sentimental, family, collector reasons, but most should be cared for and shot.

Hope she makes great smoke for ya.  Looks like a fine old gun.  BTW, you didn't say, but I'm thinkn' she's a 12ga?

She's a 12.  Locks up pretty near perfect.  The latch lever is dead center, and there is only the slightest bit of side play in the lock lugs (we know how to grow them a bit, center punch and small hammer, been doing it on my Chicom SxS since day one as it gets loose from time to time).  I wouldn't be afraid of this gun as is, but I like ZERO wiggle when they lock up ;)  Tubes looks fine, just the slightest bit of roughness just ahead of one of the chambers (somebody probably left it dirty and wet once.)

I'll do a teardown inspection, clean and lube and de-grunge it before the next shoot :)

Nothing's gonna fix the ugly on the stock wrist, but hey, it wouldn't be a CAS shooter (least not one I could afford), if the wood was right.

Everybody ought to own a fine English double just once ;)

Oh I won't chop it.  I have a coach gun for those few times when it might be advantageous due to stage design.  The 30 inch pipes with BP do a number on a KD or a popper with no need to resort to thumper loads.  I haven't patterened this old gun yet, but most of em with the long tubes will toss nearly all the shot into a pie playe sized pattern at CAS distances, and they develop a LOT more velocity.

Ho SFI,

Thanks for the leg up, but I didn't know about all those fine parts places.  I can't take credit for it but the post looks like it was my research.  It wasn't.  So, take a bow and my hat's off to ya.

Oopps, I need to pay attention more often, but hey, if the info helps someone find some much needed parts, they can credit whomever they want to, I'm cool with that;  8)

NO!  That's a PUNT GUN.  Comercial Duck and Waterfowl hunters used them to gather birds for restraunts.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

A "punt" gun? I understand the commercial hunting aspect, but why was it called PUNT?

A "punt" is a square-nosed skiff used for hunting.  Punt guns were mounted, much as small rail guns were mounted on sea-going vessels, using a yoke attached to the boat.

Correct.

The gentleman who made it has also recreated a 1880's era Quillen duck boat complete with the mount for this monster. Aparrently at the Michigan Duck hunters Festival he would row a bit of shore and set it off for the pleasure of the crowd.

Many years ago a friend of our family had one hanging over the mantle. Always wanted to try it out!
