OK WC, I am officially blown away with that. I don't understand the Filigree chisel thing at all, but then there are lots of things I don't understand about leatherworking!

We have a guy up here who posts on the forum once in a while, Sawdust Jim. He’s a real fine fella who shoots occasionally at the Range I do. He uses a holster that he has carved a basket stamp onto, if I’m even explaining it correctly. I know its real sharp looking.

He does real nice leather work in our area, though I haven’t seen him in a while.

Howdy JD
Before I got the filigree chisels I had to use a scalpel to cut away the background. That is a pain when working with anything over 4oz veg. The small areas I was cutting out would have been an even bigger pain and I probably would have over cut with a blade. The chisels look like a mini wood chisel without the wood or plastic handle. They cut much easier and cleaner than a blade.
Hope this helps.

WC, I have some very small chisels like that ( not actually leather chisels ) I may have to give that a try. Never thought about using them for leather  :o

Thanks for that explanation WC. I'm going to read up on that whole subject, and take a look at some chisels, at least on line.

Regardless of the tools used, the design and the precision with which the work was done was amazing

Thanks for sharing your work Wayne, it's very cool. Jeff

Is the filigree chisel similar to a narrow flat-tipped wood carving blade? I have a set of those.

Thanks for the pics WC. I think the ones I have will work.   With your permission I am going to do a holster just to see if I still can. And I would like to use a little of your design if you don't mind.

Thanks for the pics of the chisels, WC. I can see that they're somewhat different than woodworking ones. Those can be made from some good steel stock. I have 1/4" 4130 that may work fine. It'll depend on how the material takes a temper. I've never tried tempering the stuff before.

GB, they say “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”

WC, thanks for those pictures. I see that Bob Beard is on Facebook now. I got a friend request from him, based on your Facebook page. I don’t know the man, but I sure do know his tools!

Maybe he will offer a tool discount if you’re one of his Facebook friends! Well, a person can dream  ;D
