Buying a 56-50
« on: January 24, 2006, 08:21:59 PM »
A couple of questions.

First, what is the going cost, before shipping and insurance, of a carbine.

Second, how hard is it to buy one of the new rifles?

I clearly don't understand who is selling what.

I've finally figured out that Taylor's isn't the only seller.  I would have sworn that they had an exclusive agreement to import the guns but obviously that isn't true.  Cimarron has them.  Buffalo Arms has them.  And the prices clearly vary with the firms.  Finding the best price isn't going to be easy.

My sense of it too is that the rifles will eventually be available from several firms.

Currently the Spencer 56-50 is manufactured by Armi-Sport and is imported by Cimarron (19" barrel) and Taylor (20" barrel).

Cimarron distributes their Spencers to dealers directly or through wholesalers.

Taylor sells only to dealers.

You will not find that many Spencers in stock out there among the dealers, simply because the Spencer is not a high sale item. In most cases, the local dealer orders a Spencer upon request from a customer. In other cases, you can order a Spencer from another dealer in your state or out of state who ships to your local dealer for pick up. The local dealer performs the NICS check for a fee.

Taylor had a special on the 56-50 for some time, but that sale ended on January 15.

To get a "good" price, you need to find a dealer that bought the Spencers during the sales period (if they have some left in stock). They were sold retail in the $850.00 to $950.00 range.

If not, you have to expect to pay current retail price which probably is in the $1150-1250 range (based on current wholesale price and the dealer's markup).

You might also find some of the Spencers offered at gunbroker.com. Search for Spencer 56-50.

For dealers in your area, contact Cimarron, phone: (830) 997-9090
Taylor, phone: 540-722-2017

An article written by Jo Bilby at civilwarguns.com wrote an article about the Armi Sport Spencer which you will find here. This was written before the 56-50 became available.

I will tell you what I got mine for.

$818 (or there abouts) and out the door. I know my FFL really well and have bought LOTS of his hardware in the past.

Mine is definately at the lower end of the price range. Marshall here probably has the best prices online that I have seen.

You MIGHT find a used one for $700 or there abouts...but doubt full.

Budget $55 for a mould, $25 for a sizer, and another $60-150 for however much brass you want.
(Midway has it listed at $0.83/piece when bought in lots of 100)

Its not a "cheap" toy, but, it sure is a fun one...

40gr or so of Pyrodex RS or 777 or other FFg powder works like a charm.
22gr of IMR4227 is also a darn good starting load for smokeless.
