Leather is corrosive to brass and steel. Cartridges can't be left in for prolonged periods. If the belt is used for CAS, take the cartridges out after your match. If it's used for hunting, take them out after your hunting trip is over. Also, don't store your pistols in the holsters either.

Otherwise, Major 2's suggestion is good. Get an all canvass cartridge belt.

You can also use nickled brass in your belt loops, which won't tarnish.  Not period-correct, though.

I use a Texas Jack canvas cartridge belt.  Brass left in loops turns brown, but not green.

I think that sort of setup is shown on David Carrico's site and he's Historically correct as far as I know.  Wolf Ear's Equipment shows the same combination.

Thanks. David does offer a Fair Weather belt with canvass loops. He also has some Prairie and other canvass belts with leather billet and buckle ends. I personally use a Prarie style belt. I will have to check out Wolf Ear's site.

I'd second the suggestion to use canvas style loops. Attached is a belt I made for .45-70 Cartridges using webbing.

I found an even better solution.  Eliminate the cartridge loops entirely.  Yep.  Do away with 'em.  You see,  cartridges are HEAVY.  By the time you get to Phoenix (stollen famous song line) or the 4th stage of a match on a 90 degree day, that really trix looking cartridge belt will weigh a TON.  Not that I'm a Wuss (I Am) but hey, two revolvers is enough already.

However:  Nickel.  Nickel cartridges don't suffering's the dreaded Verdigris.  Worry over being Hysterically is accurate is silly.  Specially if yer carryin a pair of Rugers??  The concern over Hysterical accuracy in a fantasy game is ludicrous.  Don't worry .. Be Comfy (I think i got that line rite)

Oil will stop the green - soak the leather in 30 grade engine oil then dry it out with a piece of old towell - messes up the shape of the loops tho - leather goes soft.

I got two pistols that live in leather holsters - made a little sock thingy from flannelette soaked in oil that goes ona gun before it goes in the holster --- no rust!

For what its worth, the first rig I built for myself had leather cartridge loops. The bullets did turn green after a while. My next rigs had pouches to carry my spare bullets in.

Whenever you run across, find, are presented with, oogle, see Tin Types of the era we portray, you will want to make note of the "gun/cartridge belts."  Depending on the time frame.  Cap Guns were normally carried holstered in a plain belt with a "cartridge pouch" for loose ammunition.  The cartridge pouch carried forward into the "Conversions."  Then you will note the later gun belts with cartridge loops.  Law Men (Rangers) carried really wide belts with TWO rows of cartridges.  Even more heavier.  Canvas belts were primarily used for Rifle cartridges such as 45-70 and larger.  You can bet those guys cartridges also suffered Verdigris.  I don't think they cared.

Today we play a game.  A fantasy game.  A fantasy game that should be FUN.  Lugging around a heavy belt full of cartridges your not going to use in the games is kinda . . . . well . . silly.  Oh, and not at all fun on a hot day.  Especially those double crossed gun belts and those Ranger belts.  No way.  Just my thoughts.  Heck, I even have a trix set of Pommel Holsters on my kart so I can shed my Revolvers between stages.  Yes.  I am.  I am most definitely LAZY and proud of it.

Leaving cartridge loops empty is a good idea. In my opinion, a couple spares are fine for stages but not a whole belt full. Also, I don't like heavy, stiff double layer belts. I'm all for comfort. Now, pommel holsters on your cart is a good idea. I may have to roll out some leather on the work bench...
