Cimarron using the spare .45 ACP cylinder
« on: December 01, 2005, 05:40:23 PM »
I have had excellent luck with the Cimarron 4 3/4" barrel model P using the spare .45 ACP cylinder with vitually all ammo used turned in 2" or less groups at 25 yards.  All the cases easily extracted from the cylinder and recoil was extremely pleasant.  For non CAS shooting and cheaper more available ammo, the .45 ACP cylinder to me is a must have option on a .45 Colt SAA gun.  I even picked up 2 bargin boxes of 100 round Winchester white box ammo at Wal-Mart on the way to the range.  It shot very well, but was a bit smokey for FMJ ammo.  Kind of reminded me of black powder. :D

Sounds good, They say those fmj's will clean some of the lead out of the barrel aswell. Also finding good defensive ammo in 45lc can be hard sometimes, but with that cylinder you can find good 45acp JHP loads anywhere and be safe on the way back from the range. :)

I am even planning on using my lead round nose 230 grain 45 ACP reloads in this gun since it is even cheaper and will not dull the rifliing as fast.  I met a sherriff in Uvalde, Texas who carried a Colt SAA 4 3/4 barrel with a .45 ACP cylinder installed.  He had it loaded with Remington Golden Sabres just incase and he said that he had slightly better accuracy with the .45 ACP cylinder than he did with the .45 Colt cylinder.  He also liked the fact that his department issued Golden Sabres and that they loaded and unloaded a bit faster than the .45 Colt did too.  With the shorter case the ejector rod almost kicked them out of the gun.

I'm thinking about picking up a .45ACP cylinder for mine. Could be a good item to have.

Marshal:

You won't regret it for a second and will enjoy the versatility, kind of like getting two guns in one.

Yes, US Fire Arms will make you a .45 ACP cylinder or you can order one when ordering the gun.  The cost with fitting is about $265.00 plus shipping.  If you shoot your gun regularly, the cost savings will pay itself off quickly when comparing .45 ACP ammo to .45 Colt (no such thing as ".45 Long Colt") in cost per box.  Even a handloader like myself, I end up saving lots of powder over time, not to mention I can use the cheaper and more available .45 ACP brass.

There are a couple of options, since Uberti is the "parent" manufacturer for Cimarron, EMF, Navy Arms etc. , those companies offer .45 ACP cylinders and cylinder bushings as parts, so does VTI Gun Parts.  You could buy a cylinder from them and fit or have it fitted or ask Uberti USA about getting a spare cylinder as a part or have them fit it.

Today I did some additional comparision between the .45 ACP cylinder and the .45 Colt cylinder.  The .45 ACP cylinder won again with the last group being shot with my own handload I like to call an "Al Queda Special" that uses a 230 grain JHP in a Starline or GI Match .45 ACP case that looks like a Speer "flying ash can."   I use Universal Clays, but I won't give the powder charge out to keep in with the rules of the board.  I do get about 925 fps with this load and boy is it accurate with the .45 ACP cylinder.  .45 Colt did fine, it just was 1/2 to 1/4" less accurate.  All things being equal, either will get the job done.  I really am starting to like this spare cylinder a lot and like the way it makes the Cimarron shoot.

Cylinder fitting by the way is minimal if it is of Uberti manufacture.

Any body out there have a 45 ACP cylinder for a late model Colt SAA. I'm looking to buy if you do.  RICO

If you haven't tried it already, call Colt and see if they can make one for you and fit it to the gun.  I had USFA fit one to my SAA and it is awesome.

What you will notice is the cylinder window on the Rodeo is a bit larger and so is the cylinder of the Rodeo.  This gives the USFA guns a bit more strength in the cylinder, but not like the Rugers, so don't put any Ruger level loads through it.  The Uberti cylinder as you discovered, works fine with just a bit more light in the frame window.

Really, because Brian Pearce of Handloads measured the USFA cylinder as being 1/100th of an inch larger and made a big deal about it in his article.  I will check mine just to see.
