Light 32-20 Trail Boss
« on: August 15, 2015, 07:32:17 AM »
Lastest Handloader mag #297 (Aug 2015) tried several 32-20 loads in a 6" barrel Colt (20" rifle twist). The article was with a special twist rate barrel.

The most accurate load they obtained was this:
113grain Cast Performance lead bullet,   Trail Boss   2.5grain   526 f.p.s.
Remarks: most accurate load;  overall loaded length (inches): 1.568;   group (inches): 1.76

This is a light load. Not sure how accurate in more normal twist barrel, but anyways might be worth a try.

Point being, (message above) that was a very light recoil & noise load, and it gave the best accuracy of the half dozen bullets and powders tried in that 32-20 pistol, according to the article.

Both loads used: Remington cases and CCI 500 primers. Loads were fired at 25 yards.

-----------------------------------

Another not nearly as accurate load was:

95grain   Cast Performance lead bullet,   Trail Boss   2.8 grain.   684 f.p.s.
Remarks: overall loaded length (inches): 1.529;    group (inches): 4.65

And prints lower than most guns sighted in for.

"And prints lower than most guns sighted in for."

In pistols the rule of thumb is that lighter bullets strike a POI lower than the heavier slugs.

I mostly shoot BP in my 32-20 deluxe short rifle, but when I shoot smokeless my favored load is 115gr bullet (Desperado lately) over 2.7gr of Trailboss.  When I first got the rifle I made up some test loads with 231, Unique, Clays, and Trailboss.  The TB load had the tightest group.

As for "light loads", most anything in 32-20 with its little bullet and a heavy barrel is gonna feel "light"  :)

It sounds almost like a "cat sneeze" load! Was there any mention of actual noise level?

This tears it, I have Got to find some Trailboss! The cheapskate frugal side of me balked before this, but the results
that are getting posted are just too good to pass up.

Before you over pay with your new type magic powders, try some good old bullseye in your 32-20.
It is incredibly accurate.

"The TB load had the tightest group. "

Thanks, TB is what I have on hand.
In our State we can't have over 20 pounds of smokeless in our homes, so cannot go run and buy more till I use up a can. Which right now rules out Bullseye (BE is now available and more easy to find, as is universal).
