New to the board
« on: February 19, 2015, 01:58:00 PM »
Hi,
New to your board
Been reading your forum on 76's for a while now and thought I'd join.
Seems to be a lot of knowledge out there.
Just got a new 76........new to me. A 45-60 made in 1883.
Added a MVA vernier sight
Bore looked like the Carlsbad Caverns. Had one of TJ's liners put in and am starting to do a little loading.
Using Goex 52.0 gr. by weight 2F and a soft 300 gr. .459 bullet lubed with SPG. No wad
Best group at 50 yards is 1.25 inches.
Seems to like the Federal large rifle magnum and large rifle match primers equally well.
Any loading advice would be welcome.

Thanks
Scott

Glad your with us Buck Board! You bet a lot of good folks post here and a lot of good knowledge . Nice to hear of another old 76 shooting. Sounds like you have a good start with your load ,that kind of group is very good in my book. If you get a chance try same load using Swiss 2ff . I have very good luck with this powder and the original Winchester 300gr. bullet over a case full ,no wad ,and about 1/8" compression home lube is 50/50 tallow and wax, in my 28" oct. barrel 45/60 wcf.  Just loaded the same load but with a 296gr. soft bullet cast from an original mould @ .459 marked( 45/85*) . It is a good looking bullet. Hope to get out on the bench and do some shooting soon.  Will post how the 296gr. bullet does soon!,,,,,,,,,DT

Thanks for the replies.
Got some Swiss 1.5 and 2f on order as well as the same in Old Enysford.
Will get some pic's soon. Not the most computer literate guy on earth.......sort of techno challenged.

Hey Buck Board, have you done any more shooting with your old 76 ? I just loaded up some 45/60's for my old Winchester 76. Have not been able to shoot for some time due to broken bones. Ready to give it a try as soon as I get a break in the weather. Will post results soon I hope . ,,,,,DT

Hi DT,
Sorry I didn't respond sooner.
Busy building a new shop and getting everything moved.
Did a little shooting a few weeks ago.
Tried the Olde Enysford. The 2f didn't shoot as well as the regular Goex 2f. The 1.5f was about a push.
Still haven't got my hands on any Swiss.
Rifle is shooting pretty good but I don't think I'll ever realize it's potential unless I put an aperature front sight on.

Buck

Hi Buck Board. Sounds like you have been a busy man. Interesting that the old E did not shoot as well as the Goex  only your rifle can tell you what powder is best. A tang mounted rear sight and a Beaches front sight  is a big + for me . This combo helps me tremendously at the range . I can still do fairly well with the Sporting front and Semi buckhorn rear out to about 100yd. But its getting fuzzy with that set-up. Hope you all get some shooting in.,,,,,,,DT

Hey Dusty,
Just for thought,,,,,,,,,,
When looking at the 2f Old Enysford powder it seemed that there was a large difference in the size of the grains of powder.
The regular 2f Goex seemed to look a lot more consistent to the untrained eye.

Hi Buck Board, the size difference of grains is something I would not have expected .I have no experience with the Old Enysford  powder. Having a stock of Swiss and Goex . But have hopes that it would perform well. Have heard lots of good from Ranch 13 and others that have tested the Old E. The sun is out today so may be able to do some shooting in a day or so. ,,,,Good Shooting ,,,,DT.

I'm surprised at your description of Olde E also, mine has been more consistent that regular Goex, and produces higher velocity and better accuracy.  It's all I use now.
