When I was 7 of age I saw one of these go down into my Hometown river.

They said it was pilot error, cause he was trying to impress a girlfriend.

Sounds like double pilot error, doing something dumb and trying to impress a girlfriend. ;D

He was a local boy, and was showing off. My guess is, he forgot what the altimeter was for.

Very true.

As the other said to explain why he bailed out: I lost airspeed altitude and ideias.

No he didn't. That explanation was given in another case. The fellow in the Tweetiebird just went straight into the water. When he tried to bail (and he did try) it was too late.

Not sure how high the river was, and whether military pilots set their altimeters to sea level barometric pressure, or as aerobatic pilots do, and set altimeter to zero at airport elevation, either way, you can hit dirt or water anywhere up to or over a mile above sea level!!! :o :o :o :o

I'm on the coast, we're talking the mouth of the river here. It is sea level, and so was his base.

In spite of their reputation, they do not fly well in the dirt.

I saw some in 'Nam that looked like they'd tried, though.  Darned old beasty can sure take a lot of punishment.

The one at Long Beach landed with one wheel up back in '78, skidded all over the runway, and ended up in the dirt.  They flew it out three days later.
