Oiling the barrel of Uberti 73

When I clean my 73 rifle I was wondering if I need to oil the outside of barrel to prevent rust? Should I or shouldn't I? Or just keep the barrel dry?

Depends on where you live.  Here in the desert an occasional wipe down on the exterior surfaces is all you need.  In areas with high humidity they rust very quickly so you need to keep a protective coat of rust inhibitor on all the steel parts.

How about Rem Oil? Will that do?

Remoil is kinda thin.  I use CLP.

Rem oil is fine. I also have a Uberti 73 short rifle in 44-40. I carry mine as a farm gun. It has been rained and snowed on Lord knows how many times. It's even been splashed with mud. All I ever do is dry it off with a towel when I get home, spray it with Rem oil and wipe it down. Except for a few dings on the butt from the tractor, it still looks like new.

I use Moose Milk as a final coat after cleaning. Plus I use a gun sock when it's in the safe. Haven't had a problem yet here in Sydney, Australia.

Is moose milk a homemade mixture of 90% distilled water and 10% Ballistol? I think I've read that somewhere. And if so (I may sound dumb asking this but) wouldn't the water rust the gun? That may be a stupid question. Lol

I just use tap water and Ballistol. Not sure about the ratio though. I just guesstimate it.

I shoot mine on a monthly basis so not sure about rust issues. On the exterior it probably gets wiped off when the guns go into the gunsocks.

I use moose milk for cleaning, and wipe down exterior surfaces with Balistol dampened rag. I live in the Pacific North West, so an once of prevention goes a long way...

With moose milk the water will evaporate, and leave behind the oil. 7 parts water to 1 part balistol is a good place to start.

That's why I like Ballistol...perfectly suitable for timber.
