44- 2 1/4 sbn paper patch bullets
« on: March 09, 2014, 12:07:25 AM »
been messing around with shooting paper patch bullets out of my 44 -2 1/4 c sharps. had some hang ups getting started but I think im on the right path now.

I set my first target at 50 yards and fired 5 shots just to make sure it was hitting paper.

then I moved out to 100 yards and fired 5 more shoots

shot 3 on the 100 yard target was the result of a premature trigger pull. shot 5 was just a bad shot on my part. this is a load development and the sights have not been adjusted. there s room for improvement, but im happy with these results.

Nice work with an under appreciated cartridge. The old BN cartridges have been mostly shunned by contemporary shooters. They can be a little fussier than straight cases, but they are capable of fine accuracy. While I haven't had it out in a while, I have a Shiloh .40-2 1/4BN that has shot just a hair over 1" at 100 yards with FG and a PP bullet. I look forward to hearing your progress.

What are the details on your bullet and load? My rifle has shown a preference for .434 or .435 diameter slicks patched with 8 lb paper.

I been using the slicks from buffalo arms.  started with .438 at 375 grains double wrapped with the 9 pound paper buffalo arms sales. with 75 grains of 3f goex. and federal number 210 primers. it was all over the place at 50 yards. more like a shot gun pattern.
this  load is with .441 slicks at 350 grains and 70 grains of 3f goex and the same primer.
at this point I do not have a compression die, so I compress using a wooden dowel and a light wooden mallet, and a hand seat the bullets.
I recently had surgery on my hand so im having trouble rolling the paper on the bullet with out wrinkles

Get some thinner paper ,  and if you have some 2 or 1f powder, you'll find things tighten up considerably. 3 f is to fast for the bottleneck.

http://www.utrechtart.com/Utrecht-Tracing-Paper-Roll--8-0-lb---White-26-MP-10530- Dan Theodore recommended this 8# paper, I have not tried it as I've been using Seth Cole 55W,

My suggestion would be to skip the Swiss, Eynsford will do what ever Swiss does, and do it for 8$ a can less. You however can get all the brands of powder from Powder Inc. so getting a sample of each manufacturer in one order might not be a bad thing to do.
Olde Eynsford 1.5 and 2 f have both shown good accuracy in a half dozen 44's, 74-76 grs has been the favored charges.
KIK 1.5 is super accurate but a bit slower than some other powders, and fouls a bit heavier.
Goex 1f also does well as did the now discontinued Cartridge.
