Bullets for 45-70
« on: March 04, 2014, 07:18:26 AM »
Gentlemen,

I asked over on the reloading forum and maybe I asked in the wrong way. I am the proud owner of a Pedersoli Quigley Sharps. I recently purchased a Lee Hand Press and dies for 45-70 and I want to experiment with different bullets to learn and to see what bullet will meet my needs. Are there any dealers or casters on the forum that sell just a small amount of bullets, say dozen to twenty? I would not want to order 100 and end up with bullets that do not perfom well. If I can find a bullet or two that shoots well, then I will plan on purchasing a mold.

Thanks!

I cast a 405 gr RNFP that works well for me. I could send you a few to try along with the mold number in case you like them.

All the commercial casters sell in boxes of 50. Which you'll need to shoot that many just to be sure your rifle is going to like or dislike a bullet. This isn't exactly like loading for a smokeless and jacketed modern rifle.
Might check around locally to see if there's any shooters that would share some bullets with you to try.
That Pedersoli is probably going to prefer a .460 diameter bullet close to 500 grs.

Dick Dastardly sells sample packs.
He has a couple fine molds for the 45-70.

I have shot 4 bullets through my 45-70s - all from Lyman moulds.

457122 - 330 gr hollow point "Gould Express"
457193 - 405 gr RNFP
457125 - 500 gr RN "Government"
and 457132 - 535 gr Postell

All are "greasers". I shoot the 457125 mostly in the 45-70 and the 457132 in a 45-90, both out to 1000 yards and beyond. The 457193 shoots well out to 500 or 600 yards and the 457122 is good (for me) inside of 200 yards.

A lot depends on how far you plan to shoot, but it's tough to beat the 'ol Govt bullet for consistent, all around use.

Have fun . . .

;D  You may notice in your rifle a fondness for the heavy bullets. I know my Armisport wont shoot the lighter weights worth a hoot. But it becomes a tack driver once the bullet weight hits 500 grains.
Aye its been quite a ride aint it?
