Hunting rig for the Rolling Plains

Howdy Pard's,heading out for my annual WT.deer Turkey and Wild Hog hunt on the Rolling Plain's of Texas.From there I will move down to the Trans Pecos country for Mule Deer and Wild Sheep& Goat, then spend the late Winter chasing Varmint Coyote ,Mt. Lion ,and Bobcat-n-Fox. This will be my Hunting rig for the Rolling Plains Hunt,My 50 Cal. Mountain Rifle, Horn-n-Bag. Good Luck to You Pard's Hunting this season. ,,,,,Dusty Texian

Nice rifle, did you build it? Seeing the cap lock  brings back memories, I started  this road some thirty or more years ago when I realized I needed a "hawkin gun." Having since become passionate about firelocks it has been awhile. But looking at your rifle brings back some enthusiasm. It struck me that I wish I had all of the caps my frozen fingers dropped onto the forest floor or into the snow during black powder deer season up here in Michigan. I just remember fishing those things out of my little tin with shaking hands and numb fingers, trying to place them onto the nipple and seeing them slip off into oblivion.

Howdy Pard ,James you have a knack for making a feller feel like he  can see ya talking.Good To Hear From Ya . Naw I did not build this one ,It is a brass mounted 50 cal. Jonathan  Browning Mountain Rifle. I am getting all the part's together to build a as close as I can, Bridger Hawkin. I only hope it comes out near as good as the old Mt. Rifle in the pic. Heading out in the morning for a long hunt.Will post a pic if I get Lucky when I get back to civilazation.I can smell the campfire coal's now.,,,,,Dusty

Dang, Dusty, nice rig. Are the bag and strap dyed with vinegaroon?
How did your hunts go? You're so lucky to have the opportunity to keep on hunting through the winter.

Looks like a great rig.  Is your powder horn a sheep horn?  If so, please take a closer picture.  Well either way take a closer picture as it looks interesting.

Howdy Bill,the dye that I used is a mix or concotion I put together that did not come out like I wanted. I'll just have to live with the color until hunting season is over. Think I will try the walnut dye Buckskin BILLY talk's about, on the hide's I have working. Have not taken any game as of yet but have seen plenty,and have been with the guest hunters on some nice WT. Buck's and wild hog that they have taken. Will be hunting with my children and Grandchildren the next couple of wk's. My favorite time of yr. is spent watching the youngun's have at it. My turn will come soon and I'll post some pic. soon. Your right Bill ,I am lucky and I give thank's for it every day. Good Luck to Ya Amigo. Dave, wish you Pard's was in camp with me. I will post some pic,s soon I hope. Mogorilla, the horn is from a wild Spanish goat that was killed on the Muleshoe ranch near the Mexico border. I kinda like the way it fit's my side and you are right it is different. I used Mesquite wood from the ranch for the plug and copper nails to hold it together. That antler knob on the plug ,I cut thread in and it's for refilling. Now if I can get that leather swaped out with leather from the hides i am working. Think it will look much better. I'll try to post a better pic. of my horn,,,,,Dusty

Great, thanks for the picture.  Now I have to find a goat...
I love mesquite for the plug, such a great looking wood.  I plugged a bone powder flask with it.  I made the flask from a beef leg bone.

Great looking outfit.  I remember the Browning Mountain Rifle, it almost made me change time periods.

Dusty, when it comes time to dye that hard-won braintan, keep this in mind: don't let it anywhere any hot or even warm liquid!
I found this out the hard way, dropping a lovely piece of nice, smokey brain-tan into my fresh-off-the-boil walnut hull dye, and that braintan shrunk up smaller than a pair of you-know-what's in a trough of ice water.

Dusty, no there wasn't. It went from the size of a kerchief to about the size of a postage stamp in seconds ... :(
Well, that's exaggerating, but not by much. It was ruined.
