76 half cock notch ?
« on: August 11, 2013, 11:27:11 AM »
This question is going to sound pretty stupid to some but I gotta know  ;D
On my Chappy 76 it seems like the hammer is a awful long ways back on half cock :o can`t really tell but by looking at pictures of other guns some seem to be lower.
If I`m correct in assuming that some aren't as far back has anyone cut the half cock notch deeper so it doesn`t look like the rifle is cocked all the time.
Let me have it  :)

Not a 76 but a Winchester 73 just for you to compare.  I hope it will be useful.

OK I'm going to attempt this again.  This is a 73 and I have no photos of the 1876, but hope to have some taken of the 1876 in a month or so.

This is full cock (photo above).

This is half cock (photo above)

This photo you can see where my half cocked notch was damaged and broken, would fall from half cock position and fire.

I cleaned up the damaged area, used a .50" cutter on a wizard at .015" thick and cut in a new notch.  I do not recommend this unless you have an unsafe condition with your rifle.  I needed either a new hammer or a repair as I did to get the rifle back to a safe hunting rifle.  Mine was manufactured in 1883.  I have the measurements from back of firing pin to face of hammer on two original 1873 if you need or want that information.  I can measure the same on the original 1876 if that would help.

I re-read your opening post, and to clarify.  Cutting the half cock notch deeper will not change hammer position.  You would need to move the half notch position further down the radius of the hammer.  Again I do not recommend that this be done, unless there is a need or reason for doing so.   It can be accomplished if there is a reason for doing so.

I don't have a photo handy.  But I measured the distance from the hammer face to the striker on my Uberti.  It is .150" at half cock.

Pitchy, the half cock notch on my original 1876s is pretty extreme!  Close to a half inch easy.  Odd, until you mentioned it, I had not really noticed it! :o  My Uberti, 76 is more like the 73 shown above.

Since the Chappie 76 is supposed to be closer to the original, you may have a "bunch of notch," Amigo! ;)

It`s probably normal and I know I`m not so that explains it  ;D

.35" at half cock from the hammer face to the back side of the firing pin with the firing pin pushed to its forward position.  Two 1873's and one 1876 all measured very close to that .35"

YUP!  Looks just about the same as my original 1876s.  My U76 is much less, say about .35 or so.... ;D

Yep,  11/32" =  .343"  and   3/8"= .375"    That is one fine looking 1876 you have there!! I like the case color hardening colors.  Is your in 45-75 caliber?

Well that aint exactly what I said Pitchy.Looking at the Winchester 76 ,I think you could re-cut a lower notch if that's what you wanted,,,,,,,,Dusty
