300 gn lead bullets in 45 Colt
« on: June 14, 2013, 12:33:42 PM »
I have acquired a box of 300 gn LRNFP bullets as part of a package deal on a 45-70 rifle.  Problem is, they are sized .452.  Needless to say, they aren't suitable for 45-70 loads.  All my reloading manuals have 45 Colt loads for 300 gn JACKETED bullets, but not for lead bullets.  Does anyone have any experience with the 300 gn lead bullet in 45 Colt loads?  I will use them for rifle only so recoil isn't a big issue.

I don't have personal experience, but there are a number of loads listed in the current Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook.  What powders are you interested in?  Here are a few of the more popular ones with starting and maximum loads:

Trail Boss: 3.8--4.8
Red Dot: 3.8--4.8
WW231: 4.5--5.6
Unique: 4.8--6.1

Loading for rifle? If so what type?

The .452 bullets can be paper patched UP to fit a .45-70 bore.

TB & 231 are great, thanks!  I will have to get a copy of the cast bullet handbook.

I use them as hog loads in a Marlin 94 or a H&R  bufalo carbine. They will do a number on a shoulder if hit right.  But Ive never seen a pig walk away from one! DR

Marlin 1894 or Uberti 1860 Henry

300 in a Henry's, cannot push that very hard and I personally would not load the 300s in it.  I know nothing about the '94 but would think you could make a decent hunting-long range target-load for that with those.

Aren't you Paladin Ralph's shooting buddy?

I used to shoot a Uberti 1973 Carbine in .45 Colt before switching over to .44 WCF.  Any How, I was given a box of 300 grain RNFP as a gift.  I loaded them up with 6 grains of Unique and they shot just fine out of the carbine as well as my Old Dakota SAA.  Since I was shooting Cowboy Action, it really did not matter to me that the bullet was a bit heavy, at the low velocity I was shoting, so long as they hit the target and gave off a nice CLANG all was well.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.
