OT: Movie "Serenity"
« on: October 09, 2005, 02:12:05 PM »
I wanted to give everybody the HEADS UP on this movie.

It was orginally a TV series on the FOX network about 2 or 3 years ago, and my son and wife came come with the DVDs from the TV series this week. With my oldest son having surgery Thursday (he is home and doing fine), we pretty much watched the whole thing.

It and the movie is great! It is basically a Space-Western complete with cattle rustlers, horses, ladies of the evening, .... you name it.
The Capt. of Serenity uses a futuristic hawg-leg, the first mate's primary weapon is a '92 Mare's Laig.

I really enjoyed it, and think FOX dropped the ball when they canceled it. Hopefully, the movie will revive it.

The movie has been getting good reviews.  'Serenity' is the name of the ship, correct?

My better half pointed out to me the other night, that Mal's pants look like Wahmakers with a black stripe added down the sides.

One of the crew, Jayne, is carrying a LeMat revolver!

Love the show, and yes, I would consider it a Western, of sorts!

I know this was about “Serenity”, but as it was also about Sci-Fi and Westerns, and there is a thread about what makes a Western, I wasn’t sure where this fit!
High Noon ranks as a great Western in my mind, and then a great Sci-Fi /Western remake has to be Outland with Sean Connery.

I realize that this is an old thread, but since I'm crazy about good Sci Fi as well as good westerns I was wondering: other than the Le Mat that's already been mentioned, where did they get their guns? Call me a nut, but I wish they had made reproductions of the weponry like they did the reconfigured "blasters" in Star Wars. IMHO I thought it was as good at least as good as the majority of the post Civil War westerns I have seen. Also, not only did it have an obvious "western" theme, but there were "eastern" elements as well. The dialog was okay, The acting was good, But I really liked the costuming, the sets, and the way the effects were good but didn't dominate the movie.
