Reloading manual for black powder?
« on: April 07, 2013, 02:48:29 PM »
Hello!  I am looking to get into reloading to support a budding cowboy action habit, and I was wondering if any of the reloading manuals was geared towards black powder?  I have no interest in reloading smokeless powder.  I would be looking to start with 38sp or 45 colt (44-40?) as well as 12ga shotgun shells.  Do typical reloading manuals cover shotgun shells, or just metallic cartridge?  I don't have any equipment yet (and my revolver is C&B so my cartridge needs are not yet urgent) and I figure ill start by researching it to death :)

Thanks,
 Mad-Dog

Luckily, blackpowder reloading is more of a process than slavishly following a recipe book.

Like Yeti says, go to The Darksiders Den and read, read, read.  When you've done that come back with any questions that occur to you.

Oh! By the way, don't buy any more kit until you've done reading AND visit a few shoots.

The "Sixguns" book is one of the finest BP primers out there.

If you haven't purchased your guns yet - strongly consider one of the bottleneck cartridges such as 44-40, 38-40, etc. (particularly for the rifle).  They were designed for BP and the bottleneck along with thinner walls lets the brass expand and seal the chamber well, preventing getting fouling into the rifle actions.

And don't worry about the scare stories about loading the bottleneck cases.  A light spritz with Hornady One Shot (or equivalent) and I run them through my progressive press as easily as any other caliber.

You'll love the Dark Side.   ;D
