Patent dates on Pietta frames
« on: March 02, 2013, 11:32:37 AM »
When comparing Ubertis and Piettas, I have a few times mentioned the lack of patent dates on the Piettas (a few years back, Colt threatened to sue for having these markings.  Uberti ignored them but Pietta stopped putting the dates on their frames).  I've noticed that recent shipments of Piettas to Cimarron now have the patent dates, as well as making the model name marking on the side of the barrel a little smaller.  I am curious if Pietta has added the patent dates back to EMF's GWII.  Anybody know?  Curly?

If as you say recent Pietta shipments to Cimarron have the patent dates,  it sounds like you have answered your own question.

a few years back I had an email from Allesendro (Alchimestia) and he indicated they dropped them out of concern with lawsuits from Colt. I would be glad if they put them back on...(course that don't help about half of my GWs...)

I can tell you that the brand new pair of Cimarron Pietta made 7th Cav models I received only have the US marking on the frame; no patent dates.

There are some pictures on GB of new Cimarrons with patent dates.  They look good.  I wouldn't be surprised if the GW IIs end up with patent dates also.  Stands to reason.

On another note, Abilene...............do the the Pietta SAA clones have a recoil plate and how do they stack up against a real Colt in overall dimensions?

They do have a recoil plate.

Cylinder axis to center of bore distance is identical.  I think the cylinder width on the Pietta might be very slightly bigger.  All the important measurements are right on, basically.  Grip outline is not a match for any Colt, but it has the right appearance.  I don’t know how it is Uberti and Pietta haven’t been able to ever mimic this with exactness.

Dimensions on Pietta's SA guns have been really really close to Colt for several years.  Some parts are interchangeable, but not all.  We who've been working on SAs the last bunch of years consider the Pietta guns the best value for dollar in the CAS market.  Nice guns.

What's compatible? Also, does the Pietta have the coil hand spring?

Sorry Sack, but the Pietta grip outline is dang near exact to a Colt (most SAA grips aren't perfect on any pair of guns..) Here is a pix of a GW2 wearing a set of Colt factory eagle grips. Required almost no fitting...

Piettas have coil hand springs but no setscrew behind it so be careful when you take off the backstrap!  :)

Well, you can put gen 3 grips on them and there is some room to work with.  And at that, it might be a fairly easy job.  I’m speaking to maybe a different level of detail, good, bad, or indifferent.

Consistently, on the Pietta if you want to drill the alignment pin in the same spot as the SAA, you’d drill through the main spring screw.

Consistently, the Colt has more forward ‘toe’ or 'hook' on the TG / BS corner.

Consistently, on the Pietta the backstrap to rear frame edge angle exceeds 90 degrees just a bit.  Which is weird, but the way all Pietta’s backstraps are rendered, and very related to the ‘sail’ some of them show.   But that combination of less toe and more backstrap angle means that yes, the Colt profile is maintained, but the assembly is jutting off at an odd, un Colt like angle.

Not a big deal usually, because as I say, the guns have generally the correct appearance.
