Sharps Carbine Factory Markings
« on: February 25, 2013, 09:28:39 AM »
I apologize in advance if this is not the right place to ask this question.  As a living historian and somewhat hard-core old west reenactor, I’m interested in having my Italian made Sharps carbine defarbed Before having it refinished with the period correct bluing and casehardening, I was hoping to have the Sharps factory roll marks (patent dates) applied.  Does anyone know of a source that could help me with this?  Thank you very much for your help and time.

Thank you.  I'll check online for it.  Can you provide the title (or close to it)?

"Sharps firearms" by Frank Sellers, a fine source.
Reciever markings on an 1874 after August 1875       but model 1859 and early 1874

SHARPS' RIFLE CO.                                                            C. Sharps' PAT.
PAT. APR 6, 1869                                                               SEPT. 12th 1848

Then there's the lock plate, barrel, rear sight and small parts depending on model and year of manufacture.

Original lock plates are available and can be made to fit most of the Italian Sharps repros with not a lot of work. Then you also get the Lawrence primer, which is not in most repro locks.

When I rode with the 4th Va. Cav., I fit up several of the unit's carbines with original lock plates, which could be had for about $7.50 each at the time.
