Conversion Cylinder
« on: December 27, 2012, 11:39:36 PM »
Hi Y'all.  I was recently killing some time looking up stuff about Remingtons on the net, and ended up on Hoof Hearted's  website.  I noticed that there are four different companies(that he lists) that make conversion cylinders.  What is the difference between all of them, if any?

There only two manufactures at this time   Kirst & Kenny Howell @ Howell Old West Conversions ( AKA R&D )

Taylors is a Vendor for Kenny Howell ( as is Midway )

Kirst ...Kirst/Strite offers them as does VTI & Hoof Harted.

The list  :

 Kirst
 Howell
 R&D
 Taylors

Kenny Howell has two piece drop-in that works quite well ( he will also make a gated conversion on your gun )

Walter Kirst has a fine product in his gated Conversions ... also has a non-gated conversion

I have both and like both

Trinity

Welcome aboard (again).........
The conversion for a pistol like yours (Pietta Remington Army) really makes it a Versatile gun!

For drop in fit, user friendliness, ease of use, longevity and lack of problems, I would suggest the Kirst gated conversion in 45 Colt. My reasoning is as follows; you can use it wihout cutting the port for now and if you decide to go "full blown" conversion then you can do that at any time! Also 45 ammo is cheap (cowboy loads) and they are extremely accurate. You seldom see a Kirst on the used market (but lots of R&D/Howell's) because no one ever gets tired of them and they do not have firing pin issues which, from time to time, can be troublesome in the other one.

No real preference

Both of mine are on Colt style frames.

the R&D is on my 1860 Colt 2nd. Gen. ( I bought that gun NIB in 1978 ) it has had many many round through
it and many blanks in reenacting.
I bought the Cyl. LNIB from a online Friend, it has been in the gun about 8 years now.
It needed just a bit of a tweek to function and I've had many 45 thru it since.

My Gated Kirst was fitted to a NIB 1861 London Navy, Hoof Harted built this one to order.
You can see more of it @ Hoof's website ( attached )
Hoof's work was first rate.

So two different applications....

If I were to do a Remy, I'd go with Kirst and Hoof Harted.

Okay than, Kirst it is, once I get the funds......sigh.....   Does anybody know why everything in life cost so much?  Two questions about the Kisrt.  If I get my Remington ported for the gated cylinder, will it still work for c&b? Second, is there a Kirst chambered for 44-40 and if so, will it work with my Remington.
Happy Holidays.

No 44-40 bore size is wrong on your barrel.........and they don't make it :-\

Yes the Port will just be an "enlarged capping groove" ;D

Quite a few pics of conversions on my sight along with a lot of useful info

Okay, just wondering about the 44-40.  So now, I work on getting the money for the Cylinder.  No small feat without a job.

Trinity,   I made a short youtube video on my experience with the Kirst gated conversion installed on a 5 1/2" Pietta Remington. I've also installed the same cylinder on my 8" Pietta. It's easier to install on the 8" model, works good on both. I hope this helps.  JW

Hey, thanks for the video.  Very interesting.  Those smokeless loads shot higher than I expected.  As a side note,  where was your profile picture taken?

Trinity

Just for your information...

Heavier bullets will shoot higher so 250 gr loads (depending on powder charge) will usually shoot higher than a lighter tound ball.
200 grainers can be regulated to the factory sights pretty easy!

Trinity,  My profile picture was taken at Faucherie Lake in the Tahoe National Forest. Take forest road 18 off of Hwy 20 and then road 122-80, ends at lake. It's about 20 miles in from Hwy 20, road gets worse the farther you go. Usually closed by snow until late May. Great summer campground.  JW

Okay, I saw the sub-script under the picture that says in the Sierra's, and just wondered where.  I live in the "Little Sierra's" aka: The Trinity Alps.  If you haven't been here, you definitely should. Just do it in the summer or spring,  when there isn't an inch of ice on everything. ;D

Was wondering were you got that moniker!  ;D

We just sold our property in Democrat Gulch.....Just the other side of Timber Ridge from Weaverville.
Finaly had to leave a few years ago after the fires shut our business down all summer and then we were snowed in half the winter.
Beautifull place.......just hard to make a living there.

Toughed it out for close to 30 years....hated to leave :(

Cool!  It is a little hard to come by a dollar these days.  The Trinity Theater closes on the 17th of this month, so my job is gone.   You should have been here in September though, with the Stafford fire in Hayfork, SO MUCH SMOKE!!   But it's a cross I have to bear ::)  Lived here my whole life, and hope to keep it that way.

I was the projectionist at the Trinity Theater back in the mid 80's.
They still had the Carbon Arc projectors from the 30's

Topic has shifted some  :)

I too was projectionist, though it was in late 60's and early 70's  (69-71)
Carbon Arc was the normal with Zenon just begining to be installed.
Most Projectors were either Century or Simplex with Philips Norelco DP70 70mm at one House I ran.
Multi screen venues were still a few years away in the Miami area.
But finally most if not all the single screen houses were converted or closed.
St. Cloud Fla. ( where I live now) had a nastaliga single screen house called Popcorn Palace, it was a throw back
to the old days. They twined it some years ago. It still has a quaintness to it though.

Sorry for the side track  :-\ just some old memories were tweeked  :)

No problem Major, I enjoy the history.  I suppose we got off topic a bit, but my question was answered, so now we can talk about other stuff, like theaters.  On that note,  In the Roy Rogers episode titled, "South of the Badlands" the chief bad guy has, what appears to be a Remington 1875 or 1890.  You may want to check the title on that one.  I know for certain that it is north, south, east or west.  Good show
