OFFICIAL 1862 thread (post pictures here)
« on: November 23, 2012, 03:47:03 PM »
I have thought about doing this for a while.
Over on "The High Road" there are OFFICIAL threads for the different models so I am going to do the same thing here.
Many of us like to show off our pistols and this will give us a place to do so w/o "hijacking" our pards threads ;)

Rules are simple with "no axe grinding" taking precedence, followed by "stick to the topic" (no other models posted, please), then if you want to stray off topic, please search for like posts and/or start one of your own.........

Thanks, HH

Rather than post in each of the different gun threads here I'll just post my favorite group photo here since 1862 metros are my favorites.  The plating definitely helps clean up.

Two Colts I had made an offer on and scored, both were NIB.

I had to make a choice to put another project on hold for the needed funds, I think I chose wisely.  :)

Learned something. I am slicking up my new Uberti 62 Colt. I wanted to upgrade nipples. Had to tap the Ubertis with a brass punch and a small hammer to loosen them up. My Cash rachet nipple wrench had to be slimmed a couple thou on a belt sander to easily fit in the .62 rebated nipple holes.
I tried to install slix shot nips but wouldn't fit! Uberti nips are .2945 diameter. The Slix Shot measure .3065. too big to go in the hole.
Luckily. I had a set of Trescos which measure .2955 just squeeze in. Some thing interesting to know.
I've been bagging on Tresco because those nips came with ragged thread ends but now I'm glad I have them.

My new Uberti 1862 with the bigger 1861 Navy. Luckily, I got some figure in the grips.

Did some work to it. Smoothed out internals, added a Lee's Gunsmithing main spring after shortening and narrowing it. Shaped and refinished the grips in oil. Filed a nice U notch rear sight. Had to shorten the ram screw and minor reshaping of ram face. I smoothed out the trigger guard a bit. didn't like the sharp edges. Put in some Tresco nipples as they fit They are .2955 diameter and the Ubertis are .2945." . Had to slim down my Cash rachet nipple wrench to do it. Forget Slix SHot nips. The diameter is too large at .3065 to fit in the nipple rebate. I tried to modify a wire bolt spring but failed and just used the stock spring.
If you put the wedge in too tight the cylinder gap disappears. Got to fix that.
Pretty cool little poodle shooter.

I've always loved those semi-fluted cylinders.
It's a cool little gun. Your concealable weapon of yesteryear. You can get five 36 balls in a small pacakge, why carry a navy? I guess some of these were cut to belly gun length. That would be really pocketable. Cimarron makes one with a 4.5 inch barrel but I won't pay $360 for it.

I wouldn't pay that much for one, either.  Save a few more $$$ and keep a sharp eye out for a used 2nd gen.  They don't come around often, but they are out there.  I enjoy chasing these guns as much as I do owning them.  I'd rather buy a used 2nd gen at a fair price since I'm gonna shoot it eventually.  An original would be even better!

Have you seen that "Trapper" 3rd gen?  It's the size of a Baby Dragoon, 36 cal, half fluted cylinder.  I've wanted to do a gated conversion to one of those for a long time.  You could do a Richards Type I or Type II on it.  I think I'd do a Type I, .38-cal heeled bullet, probably 38 LC with a short, light bullet.  It would make a great belly gun.  Get rid of that goofy signature on the backstrap, of course.  I just gotta convince Hoof or Raven to make one for me. ;)
Hi Seth. I considered a cartridge conversion for this one but no one makes one. Someone said that the small size of the cylinder and a base circle on the back that the 62 and wouldn't accommodate the rims of five 38spl or 38 Colt and you have a no go.
The smaller 31 calibers can use the Howell 32 SW conversion. I loaded 32 SW once for an old Iver Johnson and it's not fun dealing with those little .32 bullets, heh.
I had to make a cylinder spindle end button for this one to provide consistent cylinder gap. I posted on it elsewhere. It is fit to shoot now and Thursday I'll road test the little devil.

I had a completely different project in mind , when the two I bought popped up both new in box
(49 Pocket & the 62 Police) photos posted earlier.... @ $ 150 each  :D ... I thought I'd be foolish if I passed on them.

The plan now is to get an R&D for the 49, and the original project got regulated to a back burner  :-\ for awhile.

Nice price. I just snagged a 1860 for a belly gun project from my brother in law. He only wanted $150 for a Uberti but I'm smarter than to skin a relative in a deal. I shot him $220 and saved $90 and he's happy. heh.
The gun will be chopped to 3 inches, getting 51 Navy grips and a Kirst converter. Can't wait. j

I thought about doing a conversion on a pair of 1862's last year.  My plan was to use the '49 Kirst rings and have the percusion cylinder sleved and the barrel relined for .32 cal.  Kirst discountinued the '49 conversions and after caclulating what that would cost I decided to move to another project.

Exactly, like getting a 36 caliber, doing a conversion and lining the barrel for .357 bullets then lining the percussion cylinder down to .357 so you can shoot cap and ball and cartridge in he same gun. For the cost you probably could buy a Uberti conversion and a percussion pistol and have change for lunch.

Had to have a '60 in the pic for size reference.

Look for the date code   [two letters ] it will be bracketed like this example  [  ]

then at the top of this BB as sticky, you'll find the chart,  match the letters and you have your year of manufacture  :)
