Another Burnside Spencer Serial # Question
« on: November 04, 2012, 01:41:48 PM »
Have recently acquired an 1865 Burnside Spencer carbine with ser. No. 6054. Acquired this in Canada but no idea where it might have been originally used.  Burnside cut-off has been removed but it appears to be, all in all, in good condition.  Assume 56/50 caliber. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Whith that serial number the carbine would not have originly been fitted with a Stabler cut off. These carbines were sold in almost new condition right up to the 20th century by surplas and mail order companys so it would be almost imposible to know were it came from,it would be chamberd for the 56-50 rim-fire cartridge

Many Spencers were sold into Canada after the civil war.  The surveyors that crossed the prairie were equipped with them,  Horetsky, an early photographer who accompanied them, made several pictures that are now in the Canadian archives.  I've also seen a picture of Louis Riel's militia in Fort Garry equipped with them.  As I recall the HBC museum had it but when I went back I couldn't locate it.
