I received my acceptance letter from the SUVCW yesterday.  It's a good feeling to honor my ancestor.   8)

Welcome Brother!

I used to wear my SUVCW membership medal on my GAF uniform, but being limited to the number of medals one can wear, it has been replaced by the medals I've won at the various musters.

Thank you Col.  Sounds like you've got a real problem there hehe.   8)  Congratulations on all the awards!

I ammassed a fair sized medal rack by the time I retired from the military.  I used to tease the young guys that they could one day walk with a lean to the left like I did if they were as good as me.   ;D

I was thinking of getting the SUVCW war medal for my frock coat.  Haven't decided yet.  I have a shell jacket too, so I suppose I could get a GAF medal too.  Decisions, decisions.

I don't remember Who the supplier was for the GAF belt Plate, but I bought the last one and it didn't sound like they were going to produce any more. I'm working with Prairie Flower Leather Company to produce some belt buckles and we might have some of them by next year. The collar tabs, hat wreath and membership medals are produced by Prairie Flower Leather Company. I currently have a good supply of them. Thank you for asking, that reminds me that I need to make a post offering them for sale.

I'm not 100% sure, but Trailrider used to have them, IIRC.

Alas, I can't find his website, but perhaps he'll chime in here.

Here is his website  There are some belt buckles listed, but I do not see the GAF one.

I have located a Sons of Confederate Veterans Chapter in Arlington. I am trying to get an application to join. Both of GGrandfathers on my mother's side were in the Confederate Army. I have a G Uncle that was in the Union Cavalry, Before, During, and After the Civil War.

Hanover Brass made my Confederate Navy belt with 2-piece buckle. They are the best I've found for buckles, and are very pleasant to work with. They do custom work.

Back to Trailrider:  Give him a call, but he may not be able to get the GAF buckles any more.  Or he CAN!  Call and you'll know.

Gentlemen:
I have the honor to reply to yours of today, concerning the GAF Belt Plate. Tim Parsley at parsleysbrass.com made the original run. I believe he can still make them for you. I'd recommend contacting him directly. I'm out of stock, and haven't ordered any more due to lack of demand for the belts with the plate attached. It just doesn't pay for me to sell them separately, as you'd be paying postage from Tim to me and back to you, and I'd have to charge that. The GAF plates (assuming Tim still makes them) will fit the 1-7/8" waist or saber belts, but because the hasp ends are fitted to the individual plate, if you want to interchange the GAF belt plate with, say the M1851 Enlisted Plate (applied silver wreath), the hasp end of the belt would be fitted with screw posts instead of rivets, and the stitching normally done in addition to the copper rivets must be omitted.

(Note: Because of the late date, I can't promise delivery of my custom leather by Christmas.)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!

Your obedient servant,
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

You could do the 3 rows of stitching through the outer layer only to give the impression of the stitching lines.

Very true. And I have done several both with and without, depending on the customer's preferance.  :)

Hi

My Great-Great-Grandfather Pressley B. Dunbar fought in the Kentucky Mounted Infantry all of 1864.  I'm considering joining the Sons of Union Veterans, BUTTTTT there doesn't seem to be an Oklahoma Department.  I don't really want to join an organization and suddenly become the state president or something.

What does the SUVCW do?

You could join as an at-large member.  Don't worry, they won't try to make you a state commander.  Take a look around the website and find out some of the things that go on.  It's the Congressionally chartered group to carry on the GAR.  They work to honor our ancestors and the battles they fought and battlegrounds they fought upon.

I received my War Medal from the quartermaster.  Members of SUVCW who have served and earned a wartime campaign medal are eligible.  I haven't decided whether to put it on my shell jacket or frock coat.  Perhaps I will rotate.  Either way, I am pleased with it.
