Ruger Scout Rifle

I'm not into 'black guns', military style 'assault' weapons and the like.  I was considering a "when the spit hits the spam" type of rifle though.

Read about the Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle.  M-77 action, good.  .308 Win (7.62 Nato)  also good.  Laminate stock, not so much.  Ghost ring and post/blade front site, not too shabby.  Long eye relief scope, no likey, but, you can mount a 'normal' scope, good.  10 DBM, good.  Spare mags?  Haven't found after market ones available, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

Less than 800 bones NIB, good.

I've read some reviews online, a few bad most very good.  

Anyone here with practical experience?

I have great respect for Jeff Cooper and his 1970's idea for an "all around" rifle, but his concept of a Scout Rifle is dated.   It still amazes me how much paper is wasted in the gun rags flogging this concept to death.

In our day and age of reliable semi-auto actions, why would you want a bolt action in your hands if you think you might be in harm's way?  Our own military has not issued general infantry a bolt-gun since the 1920's.  That says alot.

The concept of a carbine with a detachable magazine and an extended eye relief optic has it's merits.  I think the choice of 7.62 caliber is a good one.  If you add a semi-auto action, then you have a really useful rifle . . . and they call it:

The Springfield M1A  (either Scout model or SOCOM model).

If my life were on the line, I'd save a few dollars and buy the Springfield.

Street price is a whole lot less.  Youll see lots of nice gently used ones for sale on Gunbroker for $1100 to $1200.

AK-47s.  7.62X39 mm.  The guy I got mine from wanted $300 for it.  He needed a refridgerator so I traded a used fridge for the AK.
I think I got a good deal there.
