« on: May 02, 2012, 02:17:58 PM »
has anybody ever loaded up 38 sp. or 45 colt with FFFFg?? I have a couple of lbs. left over from my flintlock days and was wondering if I could use it for cowboy shooting?

In a discussion about black powder loads for 45 ACP, I suggested trying 4F (didn't really know, just bouncing an idea) and was strongly cautioned that it was not the thing to do.   I'd hate to send a piece of cylinder into orbit just to find out it was a bad idea.

Make home-made fireworks with it.  Knock the primer out of an empty shotgun shell.  Install a length of cannon fuse through the primer hole.  Add powder through the open end and them plug it with a slice of wooden dowel rod.   Makes a big boom, but give yourself enough fuse to get away from it.
You could also use it for stump removal.

Send a PM to Silver Creek Slim, If I remember right he did it with 45 Colt but he did use a Ruger, I wouldn't try it with any thing less.

FFFFg is perfect for getting rid of gophers.

We can learn from the mistakes of others :-)

In "Sixguns" by  Elmer Keith, he relates how he blew up a .45 SAA revolver by loading it with highly compressed FFFFG powder.

However some NZ target shooters use 4F in C&B revolvers - using 17gns in the revolver, adding Cream of Wheat; one shooter related he gets more consistent accuracy.
