H&R 1873 Officers Model, New to me....
« on: April 27, 2012, 09:30:59 AM »
Hello All...
I have recently purchased an H&R 1873 Officers Model.
I know this subject has been covered in the past but can't find where....so I'll ask again.
I don't like/want the tang sight that's on this rifle and want to replace it with one that is adjustable for windage and elevation.

What can anyone of you suggest? Something that won't require a lot of work.

Thanks,
Cat

Depends on what you call 'a lot of work' ....

I've got an H&R Officer Model with the factory tang. I also mounted an original rear sight to replace the one that came on the rifle.

I've toyed with the idea of using another type. I have a new MVA midrange I'm considering putting on the OM. The proper way would be to have the mounting screws go through the wrist and into holes drilled and tapped in the grip tang. Might need a little wood inletting to make it really stable.

I've got a Lyman Globe front and get a pretty cluttered sight picture right now. Removing the rear sight and going with a better tang might make me more inclined to shoot the rifle a lot more.

I have a Lee Shaver sight cut to fit the existing base.  Works great.  Alternative would be to inlet the base of your choice of tang sight.

Sounds interesting....
Can you give me a bit more data on that..?
Was it a specially made sight for your base? Is is possible for a photo?
Thanks,

The person I bought it from said when he bought the sight from Lee Shaver, he sent them the Offciers model ladder and they cut the pivot on the new ladder to the same specs and angle so it wold work on the offiers model base.

I had done the same thing to a Pedersoli tang sight ladder that I had laying around till I found this Shaver sight.  I'll take a couple pics and post later.
