I got my 73 in 45 cal to go with my NM and OM Vaqueros with 7.5 inch barrels . I was shooting my Urberti 1860 Henry in 44-40. Trying to get something in 45 to go with my Roogers. It was a heck of a deal. 1873 deluxe with pistol grips and checkering and a 30 inch barrel. Beautiful rifle. I'll post a pic later.
 Just ordered a tang sight so I can play at some distance. The sight is a Marbles improved Tang that has adjustments for windage.

Oh wait .... this was supposed to be about the pistols  :-\      Yeah ..... they are pretty too.

Rowdy sorry about not get back to you, but the 44/40 Rugers have 4 5/8" barrels.

Well, I have not brought me new '73 (38-40, made in 1887) to a match yet, but when I do I suspect I will bring along my 2nd Model Russian, just for the fun of it. That reminds me, I have to get busy and have a holster made for the Russian.

With my old Euroarms 73 carbine converted to .44 Colt I either use a pair of Uberti BP frame SAAs 7,5", or Centaure Long Cylinder Conversions 5,5" in .44 Colt.

I came up with another pistol that I enjoy packing with my 1873 . I have a charcoal blued SAA with German silver front sight in 44wcf she has a 7.5 barrel ,and black powder frame .

I want to thank everyone for sharing the pictures . You have posted some fine looking weapon 's thanks again .

44-40 Schofield. I used to shoot 2 1890 Remingtons with the 1873 Win, but since I hace the Schofield, I just don't want to have any other revolver in my hand.

Just noticed there were almost NO Remington's listed ? I always admired the 1875 with the 5 1/2 inch barrel . The only problem with the Remington is picking the caliber ? 45 lc or 44wcf .

Usually one of these two and I prefer the shorter one, they are both 38 and my reloading costs for BP ammo is less.

I keep accumulating Colt's and such. Another good one is this Bisley in 38-40. I do use a couple '73's, but I also like the Colt Lightning...

Two Gen 1 Colts - an original Colt Artillery model and a "civilian" artillery model.  One manufactured in 1880 and the other in 1881.  They go with a '73 Windhester from 1888 (38-40) and an 1889 Remington 12 gauge.

DDJ - do you shoot your Russian with one or two paws? I can manage with one for a deliberate shot, but I find it awkward to cock one handed.
With the spur on the guard, it's seems a natural for two hands.

But, to answer the question, my companion revolvers for my '73 1 of 1,000 are a consecutively numbered pair of Taylor's 44-40 conversions. I'm thinking of having their barrels cut down to make them easier handling.

PJ,

I find my original Mod 2 and Mod 3 Russian S&W revolvers are a great deal easier to handle one handed than the modern repro variations. The new made #3's grip frames are oversized and feel awkward for one hand shooting. (that may just be me?)
Mine are American Commercial Model S&W's, and have had the trigger guard spur removed as an after market thing.

Blair - I've toyed with the idea of removing the trigger guard spur and the hump on the grip to make the gun more shootable.

Right now I'm trying to make an offer for a Uberti S&W in 44-40. Wish me luck!

I do!

On my repro #3, 3rd Model, I ordered an extra Schofield trigger guard. The swapped out perfectly.
Don't know if this will still work out as well, but it kept me from having to cut the spur off the trigger guard.

I have an original model 2 frame, that someone tried removing the European "hump" from the back strap. Looks like... well...?

I have considered modifying my repro, wanting to bring it more into the original specs, just never went that far. yet!

The spur really isn't a problem, it's the hump on the grip frame.

I do like the archaic appearance of the Russki, especially the Cyrillic lettering on the barrel. Makes the gun unique.
