'Y' Stand for Buffalo Guns?
« on: October 30, 2011, 06:48:58 PM »
In 'Valdez is Coming!', Valdez uses what looks to be an issue 'Y' Stand to support the front of his Sharpes .... this is just too easy for someone not to be making it today ... does anyone know of a commercially available one before I have a local blacksmith make one up?

In days of yor, when the Three Musqueteers rode.  iron shooting crutches were standard.  They went out of style when muskets got lighter and had bayonets to fix.  The problem I see is that an iron crutch would be too wobbly, as opposed to cross sticks forming a stable triangle.  I think that a blacksmith could run one up in a jiffy, but that you will be using it for toasting marshmallows for a loong time

Wadd:
With the Y you could toast 2 Marshmellows at once.  If you are planning on doing BPCR sillouet, I dont think the Y is used only cross sticks.

I have three sizes of shooting sticks depending on what type of shooting I will be doing. Sitting on the ground, on a small bucket or stool, or standing. WM

Cool Shop, it is almost as messy as mine.  I built a set of sticks out of a 1X2 piece of oak I got at Home Depot for $5 and carriage bolt with a wing nut.  I have yet to put spikes on the ends.  I was planning on using big nails.

I was at Shiloh Sharps last week, the commercial ones they sell, appear to be made of a 1X4 that was ripped to an even 3 inches and the spikes were pretty big.  I think for BPCR you have a max of 3" on the spikes.

after the clip I was about to respond and scrolled down ..here is what one wrote to critique

"The forked support is pretty much a joke in this clip. Certainly it reduces vertical movement, but has no effect on lateral, which by the way, you plenty of it if you watch closely. What would have made it more realistic is if he had used 2 as a bipod."

Cross sticks were the bomb then and now ....

I do have a couple of cracked hockey sticks.  Actually think they might work pretty well.

Go for it, EH!

I thought about how to do it.  Leave the crossing point where the bolt goes through full dimension, and taper it towards both ends.  I like the copper fittings shown by Grogan.

Thinking of just kinda rounding off tops.  Squaring bottom and drilling hole for a biggish nail in the botoms.
If overzealous brass or copper tube bushing where bolts go thru and either old combat boot tounge or belt for leather.
Where they not too big would be a hoot to leave the blades intact
