Bit of a shuckkin prob ;-)
« on: October 10, 2011, 04:23:51 AM »
Ho pard/ettes,
Nice Monday Mornin here in Portsmouth UK

Got a little`ole prob with my 12g brass shells.. the first 2 shuck fine, but the second 2 invariably don’t, one or the other will be stubborn and sit in the chamber. It/they will pull out fine but they won’t shuck!!
I pre chamber them when I make them so as to supposedly remove the prob but obviously something is creating this prob!  They are not heavy loads 50 or 55gns FFG dependin on distance. I also noticed that some of the ones that didnt shuck are NOT slidin back into the chamber, I dont know iffn this is to do with heat expansion

Check that the chamber is completely clean. It could be someone over polished the chambers and they are slightly oversized but you would need a gunsmith to check that out or deep set calipers.

Howdy Paladin,

Mag Tech Brass?    I have a Chinese made TTN 1878 Coach gun that I use with mag tech brass 12 guage.   Occasionally, one or two things happens to the brass.   If it gets out of round, it becomes a pain and is hard to slide out easily.  Such as, accidently gets stepped on while transitioning to the next position.  It can be fixed, but is a real pain in the neck to do.

I've also found the if I get in a hurry loading up, I get a little sloppy with the glue on the over shot wad, and it spills over, to the outside.  Not noticable going in, but sticky coming out.............

Ho pards,

Thanks fer your replies..
I think the cause could be that I`d changed my sealant! there was a LOT of gunk in the chambers when I came to clean,
Sooo for this months match (Sunday) I have gone back to my original, a very small ring of UHU. It should behave, I will report results next week  ;D

Well,
Had our shoot today and the ole brass shells were... `bang on the money`!! I used just a tad of UHU and Nooooo probs whatsoever!!  Yessiree those blighter's plain threw themselves outa my scattergun, another point though... I feel that I might of over-annealed a few of the hulls as there wuz 3 that again were a touch too tight when loaded, sooo they are now going to be practise rds.

Yahoo UHU!

(Paladin, my British amigo, many here don't know of UHU, but we're familiar with various forms from the Borden Co. which is Elmer's.  Of course ... like UHU, there are many different types of Elmer's products.  I learned of UHU in Germany.)

My brass hulls are all old and from a variety of makers.  After loading them I always drop them into the chambers to make sure they slide in freely.  If they are sticky going in they will likely (but not always) be sticky shucking.  Those get marked with a red line across the bottom and I use them when they are the last shots of the stage, since they can be pulled from the chambers off the clock.

Howdy!

I have a half-gallon jug of Sodium Silicate (waterglass) and if I could, I'd send some to Paladin.  But no liquids in the mail ...

Besides - I use waterglass for tradition ... there are other glues/chemicals easier to find that work as well or better!  I've been using the jug of waterglass for 4 or 5 years now, and I doubt I've used over a half-cup of it in total!  (Let's count 'em - perhaps 200-250 shells loaded and WG used.)  A little goes a long way!~

Is that an international mail rule?  I know that domestically you can mail properly packaged and marked liquids... (so long as they are non-hazardous/non-flammable)

I think it's international.

Or ... I'm totally mistaken.  Speaking as a former Mailman (Gruntled Postal Worker) sending liquids isn't really a good idea.  You're right, Mad Dog Man - properly packaged is the important wording here!

Well, coming as no surprise to me, the good Perfesser comes up with a DIY "recipe!"

Where would we be without ya, Pard?!

Thanks for the info.  I hope Paladin can get the ingredients - they sound pretty universal and international!

Paladin, here's a tip.

I  don't know how long the time is between loading your shoot-gun hulls and when you shoot them.  OK, then:  I have found that shells I've loaded sometimes have waited (patiently) for me to shoot them, sometimes 8 to 10 months.  I tend to load in quantity (all I have at once) - over 98 brass 12 ga shells.  (Why 98 when Magtech shells come in boxes of 25 or 250?)  Well, 2 split after firing: one split the first firing, the other after 3 loading/firing cycles.)  They split at the mouth and I simply trimmed off the 1/4" or so that was split.  I keep the "shorty" shells for blanks that I use when our club "holds up" the C-K-S Railroad trains during the summer months.

Here is a slideshow of our summer fun re-enacting:  http://home.comcast.net/~glfmcposse/reenactments.html

Anyway, you'll need to keep a weather-eye on those loaded rounds after they've been loaded but not yet shot after 6 months or so ... the waterglass tends to dry out and needs another application.  This MIGHT take 5 minutes, so watch your time ...
 ::)

If you never le'em set more than one match to the next you won't have that problem.  By the way, I keep my quart jar of waterglass in the 'fridge.  I don't have any idea if that is helping or not, but I have the room in my spare "drinks" 'fridgerator and so far, there has been NO deterioration in the last 5 years!

OR ...
.... he can continue to use white glue as so many of us quietly do.
