45 S&W Schofield load data
« on: October 08, 2011, 10:22:21 PM »
Looking for load data for a 180 gr RNFP bullet. In all the books that I've been looking at has data for 200 gr bullets and none for the 180 gr. I was told by the factory to use a 180 gr bullet in my Spencer. It would feed better. I am planing on using the Spencer at the GAF Grand Muster the end of October.
Thanks

Hi Joe,

I can't help you with load data, but Ultramax sells a 180 grain flat nose cartridge that should work just fine in your .45 Schofield Spencer, if time becomes a crucial factor for you.

Scroll down to the .45 Schofield Cartridge

Talked to Chris at Hodgdon's and he said a safe starting load with Trail Boss would be 4.5gr.
Loaded a box of fifty and out to the range I went. At 35 - 45 yards  missed 5 rounds out of the 50. Not too bad.

Windy - I like trail boss for SASS, but I don't get good accuracy with it in my Spencer rifle (56-50) at 100yrds.  At 50 it was passable though.  I'd be real curious how you do with .45 schofield.  A buddy of mine that know loads and ballistics told me trail boss works best in pistol cartridges.

My best so far is with 777.

About this Trail Boss, the past week-end I was shooting at the KVC Buffalo shoot and was using my 74 Sharps carbine in 45/70 loaded with a 405gr lead bullet and 13gr of trail boss. I was hitting the buffalo at 300 yards.

Thanks Windy,

Only 13 grains?  Interesting.  I was loading 9 gr in my 56-50s.  Maybe I need to dial the load back.  I'm going to try 7gr. and see.

I appreciate the data.

Greg
