Winchester 1892
« on: September 06, 2011, 05:55:45 PM »
I am new to CAS, SASS and looking for a good lever action that is legal.
I notice Winchester has a new 1892 Carbine. I am interested in .357 magnum.
Is it legal and any thoughts?
Thanks much.

Legal--yes.

Other rifles to consider:

1 Rossi
2 Marlin 1894
3 '66 Uberti
4 '73 Uberti

Thanks! Guess I need to find a match to observe or watch some videos to see what is popular and strengths and weaknesses of each.

That's a good idea.  Go to the match and work the actions but start w/the hammer down so you can feel how smooth the action is.

Keep in mind NO rifle is ready for FAST competition until worked on.

My rifle progression (all 45LC)
1 94 Win worked on by me.  Reliable but slow.
2 '92 Rossi from/worked on by http://www.stevesgunz.com/  Fast, smooth, reliable but not short stroked.
3 '73 Beretta Renegade (Uberti) worked on by http://www.cowboysandindianstore.com/ fastest, smooth, reliable and short stroked.

Many are saying steer clear of the new Marlins until Remington works out the QC problems.

I go back and forth with choosing the 45LC or the .357. I halfway decided on the .357 because of ammunition costs.
I currently reload my own .45 ACP ammo and would reload whichever I decide (45LC or .357).

Keep in mind the '92 action is VERY strong.  Rossi makes a '92 in 454 Casull.  If you get one in 45LC it can be used for hunting.

MY '94 Win and the '92 Rossi are used for cowboy and hunting.  The '73 is a much weaker action, even though it's the fastest play gun.

My Rossi is a 20" short rifle in stainless steel.  For a hunting/play gun it's close to perfect.
