Power factor for rifle?
« on: June 15, 2011, 03:56:24 PM »
I may have just overlooked this in the SASS rules but here goes.
Is the power factor for the rifle the same as pistol ?

For example a 44/40 200gr @ 750 ft/s gives you a power factor of 150. But this is not up to the velocity of a factory round fired out of a rifle.

Am I missing something or is the power factor only dealing with pistol ammo?

Wild Bunch is new to our region and we are trying to get off on the right foot.

Thanks for your help

Hi, Gypsy.

The power factor of 150 applies to both rifle and pistol ammo.  Most rifle ammo that I have seen chronographed at major events goes well beyond 150 - but that is the standard.

If you shoot SB at Winter Range or EOT, your pistol and rifle ammo will be choreographed, and your pistol weighed with an empty magazine inserted.  They fire 5 shots over the chronograph from each firearm.  I load my ammo to provide a bit of a cushion, because ammo may perform differently than it did at home, depending on temp and altitude.  149.99 fails!

Grizzly,

Thanks, That answers my question about the power factor.

But why do they weigh the pistol ?

The rules specify that pistols used in the Traditional class weigh no more than 40 Oz, and Modern no more than 42 Oz.  This is to prevent folks from adding weight to the pistol or magazine to dampen recoil and thereby gain an advantage.  Adding weight to the magazine is supposed to make it drop quicker.  Tests indicate that it doesn't.......
