Tang sights - 1000 yards - Sharps
« on: November 21, 2010, 01:34:50 PM »
Time for me to buy a long-range tang (rear) sight for my 1874 Sharps.

What do I need to go out to 1000 yards?

How about this one - 7" tall overall, 4" of vernier adjustment.:

You need to get the very best sights you can afford. Those sights will do alright to start, but you may find you need to replace them at a later date.
Shooting to the 1k line takes a good bit more attention to detail of everything from the loads to the sights to the shooters ability than does bangin away at close range stuff.

If you want something really good, look at Montana Vintage Arms web site.

jolasa, regardless of the thickness of your wallet for the cost of a top of the line vernier, you need the 4" staff to shoot 1000yds.  A 535gr bullet will need 175+ MOA and your 100yd base line setting will eat up many MOA's on the staff depending on the base of sight you buy.  And yes, the Hadley ocular!

Your individual sight setting for 1000 yds will depend a great deal on the height of your front sight. The taller the front sight the more staff you're going to need. Also keep in mind it becomes quite difficult to keep a consistant cheek weld when shooting past 800 yds. So using the lowest front sight you can get by with will help that problem.
You don't need to break the bank for a rear sight, but you do need a sight that will consistantly lockup in the same upright position, with a staff and lead screw built to tight enough tolerances to give pinpoint adjustments.  .001 of an inch variation in your rear sight can throw you completely off the target at the long distances.
