Sights for H&R Little Big Horn Trapdoor.
« on: August 29, 2010, 06:07:31 AM »
I took my new (to me) Trapdoor to the range today and gave it a workout. I really like the rifle or cabine to be more correct. I found that the 3rd biggest scoop from my Lee Powder Measure kit filled the case to the point where the 300Gn Boolits my mate made for me just compressed it a tad. I have all sorts of trouble getting it on target at first, but managed to do so after a few tries. The fine peep is too little for my 62 year old eyes (which aren't too bad, I don't wear glasses apart from reading fine print) and the elevation adjustment was coarse to put it mildly. Obviously this was cheaper to produce than any other type.

I will be using the carbeen for Pat Garrett and Frontiersman matches in Cowboy Action and hunting (with Black Powder of course). I have a Browning BPCR in 45/70 for the long range stuff.

I suppose a set of standard Uberti sights would be the best bet.

I'm pretty sure the gun was unfired as it now has fresh rub marks where the trapdoor closed and a thin line where it stops on the hinge which wern't there before.

I have to buy a new camera, the phone just doesn't cut it.
All my cowboy gun's calibres start with a 4! It's gotta be big bore and whomp some!

Looks like a fine little rifle to have fun with.

And I wouldn't waste the money on a camera when you could use it, instead, on another gun!

The original Model of 1879 sight will fit the barrel contour and once polished and re-blued, it looks 'right', with all that's needed is to get the barrel drilled and tapped.

They were supplied for 'Carbine' and for 'Rifle' - the 'Rifle' version being used on both the standard Infantry rifle as well as on the 'Officer's Rifle'.

The only problem with them is cosmetic - once installed.

The bottom of the rear sight base will obscure the tops of the lettering.

Its a 45/70. I would normally use 400 or therabouts weight boolits, but these were sitting on the bench at the gun dealer who specialises in Black Powder and had Lyman Gold BP lube.I have squillions of commercial 45/70 bullets (well, three or four thousand anyway) and didn't have time to cast and lube any.

The Pedersoli Carbine sight looks very much like the original and is in stock in Australia for $AU120.

That might be the way to go. I suppose it fits.

Hallo

Put an original sight on it. You will not regret it. The "QUALITY" of the originals is unserpassed. You can get them in an open notch type, or a peep, and they are markrd "R" for rifle, and "C" for carbine, on the side. The Italian sights just don't have as nice a finish, or notches in them, and some times the leafs don't lay flat, as do the originals.
You can find originals, on line at varios parts dealers. Google 45/70 springfield parts, or things like that.

Just my .02 cents.

The original Officer's Rifle was fitted with both a tang sight, as well as a receiver sight of the then-current pattern.

The Model 1879 Rifle sight was most common.

That is what I was going to do that in the first place, but the convienence of buying a sight that was in stock and a day or two away via post is tempting. I will investigate the originals. My mate owes me a few rust blue jobs, that would be a nice way of finishing the gun off. Gettin the part shipped from the States is a touch and go thing, a lot of dealers won't post overseas. I'll see how I go. Thanks.

If you can't get them to cooperate I would be willing to buy it here and post it over there.

Thats mighty generous of you Springfield, but the old guy (I'm 62 and when I call you old, you are well into your 80s :) )/ friend who is the work from his garage Black Powder specialist gun dealer/gunsmith had a visit from the rep from the Pedersoli importer and he bit th eboolit and ordered me a carbine sight as there was only one in stock and I was interstate and out of mobile phone range. I'm glad he did it, that will get me going, I will investigate a proper sight later if this one doesn't work out. I'll remember your offer :D, thanks. I will take the rile down to him next week and he will fit it while I'm away for a few weeks.
