Stable Cutoff survey
« on: June 09, 2010, 03:29:07 PM »
I have a survey for all you Spencer-phials. I have been rebuilding an M-1865 carbine for a friend, and it is missing the Stabler cutoff, so I ordered one up from Ed Knisely. It’s original, but it doesn’t fit. That’s when it occurred to me that I have seen two different cutoff designs. The drawing below shows the differences. As far as I know, no reference book has mentioned the two designs.

The Type 1 and Type 2 designations are completely arbitrary at this point. The carbine I’m working on is in the high 8000 serial number range, so would have been one of the first to be equipped when the cutoff was phased into production in June of 1865. It has the Type 1 design.

So, of the carbines you all have with cutoffs, which have Type 1 and which have Type 2? What models are they (M-1865 Spencer, M-1865 Burnside, M-1860 rebuild or Springfield/Spencer rifle), and what is the serial number (within a couple hundred is fine).

I’ll compile the data and publish it here and maybe in Man At Arms, or if Roy Marcot is planning a third edition to his book, I’ll get it to him.

You can contact me directly at T_CBECK(at)Charleston(dot)net

Thanks!

So how do I get in touch with Ed Knisley?  I have inherited a Spencer M1865 131xx and it is missing the cutoff.  Need to know where to get an original.
Thanks

The first thing to do is check weather it was originly fitted for a cutt off,16008 Burnside Model 1865 were delivered without cutt offs, and 6457 Spencer Modles were deliverd before the cutt off was fitted, now for the tricky bit,if the carbines with out cutt offs were returned to Springfield they would be fitted with a cutt off, could be from spare 1865 parts or Springfield made parts, check the triger plate drawings obove to see if your trigger plate matches the Type 1(Spencer) or Type 2(Springfield)or if it is a Burnside 1865 it may not be fitted for one at all as all 1865 were not converted
