In the late 1830s, several southern states passed anti-Bowie knife legislation attempting to curtail the manufacture and sale of these knives. In 1837, the Alabama legislature imposed a $100 transfer tax on Bowie knives and stipulated that any killing with a Bowie knife was murder regardless of the circumstances.
