I got a pair of leather shoe lacess at WalMart and wrapped the lever. It's not really soft but it does make for a tighter fit for my fingers and they don't get banged up.
The downside is that over time the leather will collect mositure and start to rust the lever. For this reason it might be nice to get one with snaps so it can be easily removed for cleaning. But I didn't want the snaps...
If want to do he wrap yourself try making a hangman's noose type wrapping.

I did that on my wife's Marlin for her, then to make it a little more user friendly, took a small piece of buckskin and wrapped it over the laces and sewed it on the bottom....made the lever tighter and it's much more comfortable than plain laces.

Can't abide them wraps. Actually never felt the need for a wrap. Just another gamer thing don't you know

I took a piece of leather aboout 1.25 inches wide and sewed it baseball style (two needles) around the lever; seam to the outside of course
Have a thicker, narrow piece of leather inside the wrap on the inside bottom of the lever & held on with double sided tape. This is a spacer so my knuckles do not move inside the leather wrapped lever. The movement contributes to the bruising. which has stopped plaguing me.
