Del's 225036 Mold
« on: July 03, 2009, 11:06:18 AM »
New Topic ... so as not to hijack the Shiloh thread
Del - try a 22 Long ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_Long or Extra Long ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_Extra_Long
The 22 Long and Extra Long were popular gallery rifle rounds, going all the way back to the 1870's.  I have a JM Ballard #3 rifle, vintage 1875, that is chambered for 22 Long.  The 22 Long can also chamber a 22 Long Rifle because the only difference between the Long and Long Rifle is the weight of the bullet.  But the Long and Extra Long have different case lengths

40g, 46g, 54g, 60g, 69g, 75g, 84g, 90g, 98g and note that the mold was an Ideal mold too (22536)

If you want to talk with a gun crank that has loaded 22 black powder rounds - 30wcf aka John Kort.  He might even be interested loading some 225036 bullets if you were to cast some for him

Long story made short, the mould was given to me by a friend.  I need to cast some at the 40 gr level and play with them in my 22 Hornet, which is the BP 22 WCF round.  Goal is a bit more power than the 22 LR for tree rats, maybe 22 WRF.  And yes I do need to play with it with BP also.  On the list of things to do.

I think it would be great in the Hornet.  (Speaking out of turn as I don't have one!)  I notice that it is not a heeled design, which the .22lr that we know requires.

I note that this mould, with both Lyman & Ideal numbers, is the FIRST on the list I posted.  BTW, I found that link on an earlier post, either here or on TOR.  Your appreciation is gratifying but I did not invent this wheel.

Someone gave me some 245496 83 grain Loverin style bullets, years ago.  I've never tried any, but i've heard that these little guys are hard to cast properly.

Del;  As the Hornet has a 1 - 16" twist, I don't think a long-cast bullet would do that well?

Now this gets even more interesting, my mould has a round nose on the bullet, not the flat as shown in the picture.  It is also adjustable so you can cast all the different sizes.

I'll dig tommorow and see if I have any of the full length bullets I cast left of if I ended up giving thim all away.  BTW at full length even Lino did not make the real pretty nice bullets, I had to use streotype.
