50-95 Smokeless loads?
« on: May 20, 2009, 01:35:43 PM »

The only Smokeless loads that I have seen is 26grains of IMR 4198 with a 285 grain bullet or 23 grains of IMR4198 with a 350 grain bullet.

Do any of you have loads that you’re willing to share?

In the 3rd Anniversary Edition of the Handloader's Digest, ther is an article titled "Black Powder Guns" by Frank Barnes which lists "Loading Data For Black Powder Cartridges Using DuPont 4759 Powder And Lyman Bullets". Here are exerpts from that list:

CARTRIDGE     BULLET:diam./wt.    CHARGE    MV(fps)    MOULD NO.

40-60WCF       .403/210               18            1520       403168
45-60WCF       .456/300               22            1370       456191
45-75WCF       .456/350               22            1380       456192
50-95WCF       .512/290               22            1420       512139

I hope this may be of help.

About 10 years ago, I switched back to black powder only in all of my original 76's.  However, the smokeless loads that Joe posted are all within a grain or two of the ones I used to use for all of these calibers.  IMR 4759 is by far the best smokeless I've found for these calibers.  It has been used by old timers for nearly 40 years in original 1876 Winchesters.

Adios,
Buck
