3:10 to Yuma
« on: March 03, 2009, 09:10:04 PM »
Great movie both the first one and the remake.
Now I don't know about you and where you get your ideas for making holsters but I got one from this movie.
I like the one Will made for Russel Crowe in this one and wanted to try and make one like it.

First I need to appoligize to Will for trying to copy him.  His work is so good it just makes you want one of each of his holsters,  same with Chuck Burrows.  Well since I am a little bit more into the cowboy action and Roy Rodgers era I chose to do this one from Wills creation.

I cut out 4 the other day and so far have only carved 2.  I am going to take it a little slower than before so I don't embarress myself.  I also am making the first two with a little drop in them.  Then I have to try to duplicate the finish.  I want the old time look that Will got or one like Chuck does with his work.

Here is my first 2 carved.  Hope you guys like them.

Any comments would be much apreciated.

Nice work Johnnie, I bet you are looking forward to getting them all done.  Hope you have luck on duplicating the " used look" of the movie pieces. They  will be a great finished product.

Will G's 3:10 to Yuma holster is my favorite, bar none. If I had the $$$ I'd love to have Will make me that holster. One of these days I will try what you are doing, and by the way, you've done a very nice job.

They say immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I can't speak for Will, but as long as a person doesn't try to dupe someone into thinking he made it, or it came from the movie set, then what the heck!

Be sure you show us the others, and the finished holsters, I'm looking forward to seeing them!

Thanks, JD

Howdy Johny Dingus  ;D

Well it sure is nice to have you back with us Pal, and look what you're turning out, this is going to be beautiful when finished, and your carving looks great too, I didn't know you were even doing carving yet, and look how nice it came out, it seemed like it took me forever to get started in the carving, but every one pushed me to do it, seems all my pards had more faith in me than I did, and I'm glad I jump in and started, it opens up a whole other world in leather for us. Keep up the great work, and be sure to post a picture when you finish. :D

Howdy Johnny,

Very Very nice! I really like to see leather work in it's various stages. I always learn something. I know we all are looking forward to seeing the finished product. Many thanks for sharing this with us.

Thanks for the positive reply's.

JD,  if I were a little thinner I could get by with out droping them.  I am going to try that too though.

Dr.Bob I don't think of it as theft I haven't really taken his physical property.

Chuck thanks for posting that again I will use it to get the aged into the leather now if I can only get the color right.

Ten Wolves carved my last set of Dodge City's but they were my first carving and these well are a little better.

Pokey I agree that each time I do some carving it gets better.  I look at a lot of carving's and then look at mine and see what I can do to improve.  Well that's a whole lot of improving from what I am seeing out there,  but that is the fun of it.

I really like the brown you achieved with the oil based dye. I can't describe it, but it looks like the rig is a few years old...but not 100 years old.

Those look might fine Johnny.  Ya' zeroed right in on the style.  I haven't had time to drop by the forum much, but I'm glad I got a look at 'em when they were finished.  That's nice coloration.

I've had several folks comment on my absence from the forum, so I've had to give an account of how I've been spendin' my time.  Here are a couple of links to one of my hobbies, 1820s Mountain Man doin's:

http://www.willghormley-maker.com/ScoutinTurkeys.html

My wife has been laid-up for over a week after reconstructive surgery to reconnect the ACL in her right knee.  My youngest boy, (Patriot-7), fell Friday evening and broke his right arm pretty bad.  He's doin' well and will make a full recovery.  But, it don't leave much time for work when you're plain' nurse.

On top of all that, I've got to get my prospectin' gear lined-up for this summer.  I'm buildin' a new rocker-box and wheelbarrow so I can process more ore down to concentrate to pan out.  I wanted to go last summer but the gas prices nearly killed me.  I plan on sellin' all the saddles and leather gear I've got stored-up around the shop to raise the gas money to get me back to Colorado.  Still lookin' for that mother load.  I know there's a vein there waitin' just for me.  One I can dig out with a spoon.

Will thanks for the compliment.  Sorry to hear of your troubles. Glad that things will be alright for your boy.  Have your wife follow Doctors orders on her recovery and not try and do things to soon.  A friend of ours didn't listen to ole doc and had a second surgery cause of it.

Know what your talking about with that gold fever.  Wife got me a sluce two years ago this summer and we haven't yet got it to water.
