Choose the top 19th century lawdogs
« on: February 22, 2005, 02:24:30 PM »
Once again I'm curious.   :)

Name your top three lawmen who were active out west before the 1900.

Let's see who we come up with.

Nice pic, Mike! ;)Boy, with all the hype some of them got, it's hard to say. Of the non-hyped ones, maybe Bill Tilghman(SP?). Of the hyped ones, maybe Earp........Buck 8) ::)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

I'll have to go with Bill Tilghman.  He covered  both the 19th and 20th, but was a great lawman.  Too bad he had to meet his end the way he did.

my grandpa Grant, late 19th century eastern Oregon lawman, who once arrested his own brother for breaking mules inside the city limits on a Sunday. ;D

After the Sherlock Holmes crack I posted above, I'll be serious now.

Of course, William "Bill" Tilghman has got to be on everybody's list.

Another, on my list is Jeff Milton. He called Wes Hardin a liar to his face and lived to get an apology. By all accounts, Milton was a lawman of the finest character.

Third, although not a technically a lawman, Allen Pinkerton, founder of the famous Pinderton detective agency did much to bring many lawless types to justice.
God bless,
Birdgun Quail

Did I ever tell you fellers about my Ole Pap?
He was my favorite lawman of the 19th century.
Some say it didn't happen like that at all!

I'm going to have to go with Elfego Baca on this one.  He wasn't well known, but he made a name for himself down in New Mexico.  The link above tells his story.
